trying to figure out what to do with my future...

Hey fellas, I was wondering whether or not you guys could help me out here.. Anyway, I'm a 2nd semester senior in high school, trying to think about what to do with the rest of my life... My plan was orginally to go to a community college, (since I smoked/drinked my high school carrer away) and then transfer to a 4 year to take up computer engineering...

But, then I discovered Auto Shop... Now it's like, I wanna work on cars, and perhaps own my own shop someday, but now I'm kinda lost.. Like I'm not sure if I wanna keep it as a hobbie, or do it full time, or whether I'll have a job as a computer engineer. So I am debating whether I should go to a techinal school to get my ASE, and maybe do community college on the side so when I get business going, I'll know what to do, or just go through with the original plan.. Any thing you guys got would be helpful... thx.

Don't put too much thought into it yet. Get to college, and start taking all the basic classes, with maybe one or two involved with the major you want to start out. That way by the time your first year is over, you have an idea if you want to stay in your desired major or make a switch. I'm still in college and before I even got there everyone(adults) were telling me that they still don't know what they want to do. And I didn't quite understand it, but I do now. Try and do something you have an interest in and go from there.

I'd say go to the community college first and start taking important classes that will make it possible to transfer to the 4 year college. While you do that, get a part time job at an automotive shop and work on cars as if needed the money to survive. Working on cars for a living is a lot different than working on them as a hobby. Even though I work on Mercedes and they are fun to drive and stuff, the actual work that I am expected to do is not what you would call fun. I now have no desire to work on my Jeep at home and I am going to sell it in order to buy a daily driver. Don't get me wrong, I do like my job and I like working on the cars, but, it's not what I expected when I realized that I loved working on my Jeep as a hobby. Just give it some time. Going to school and working on cars part time will hopefully give you an idea of what you want to do for the rest of your life.

yeah, as long as you realize that working on cars for a job means that you'll be changing the oil, blah blah, fixing what's broken, and not much else. i'm in school learning to do just that. So far so good, but things always change.

Re: trying to figure out what to do with my future...

a business degree is something very versatile that can be used, so say you start out in a shop that you own working on cars you and a coupe of partners then after it gets going you can movve more say into the managing, or advertising, or sales of the lil business you have going. that way your not working on cars all the time. but your still doing something related to them just my thoughts

But you don't need a business degree to open a shop

I personallly couldn't stand taking business classes, i think its outta the question for me.

That's true, but if you don't know how to run your business well then it wont last more than a year, if that. I suggest taking the basic classes, and then try to figure out a major sometime in your freshman year in college. Just dont try to figure out everything right now...it never works out.

Good luck.

Don't bother with computers, you probably will not find a job after graduating anyway.
