96 lumina transmission help!!!!!!

Need help. I just finished rebuilding the 4t60e transmission in my 96 lumina. Everything works except first. It starts in second and shifts smoothly to third and overdrive. I know it has a limp mode that doesn't allow it to shift to first. It says thats a comfort feature so first is totally computer controlled. I know both shift solenoids are working because they both are used to go between the other 3 gear ratios. I also unhooked the electrical from it and it drove the same. I think the computer has it stuck in limp mode. Is there anyway to reset the computer myself or make it work properly. I don't care to take it to a shop to put it on a computer if I don't have to. I'd rather fix it myself. Everything worked properly when I dissasembled it. It had the roll pin in the diff sheared and the pin was almost warn thru the final drive housing. I had to replace that, the valve body, the fluid pump, and a baffle type tube. Along with the major overhaul parts. clutches bands seals etc. Any ideas or suggestions would be gladly accepted. Even if it just sparks something in my head to look at. Thanks.

Have you scanned the ECM for codes?

Re: 96 lumina transmission help!!!!!!

No scanner and you can't get codes off the dash in this model. I am going to have to go have it scanned for trouble codes though, that sucks. thanks for the reply.

Re: 96 lumina transmission help!!!!!!

just in case the way you reset your computer is to disconnect it, somepeople have said 30 seconds or 5 minutes but I like to disconnect for 10 minute just to be safe.

Re: 96 lumina transmission help!!!!!!

Ok I will try that also. I unhooked it but only for 30 secs. The only reason I think resetting it will help is because While I was refilling it with fluid I started with 5 qts and ended up with like 15 or so in it. It wasn't happy when I ran it thru the gears to help take up the fluid and gave out several red warning lights on the dash, I felt that might have put it into limp mode or something. Why can't this crap be simple, I had to buy a damn video and manual to rebuild it and it was still a b****. Thanks for you suggestions. good luck on your own projects, I will let you know how it goes.
