Re: Smokey

Im not sure of the years but i watched a special on tlc or something not long ago and to get 1 of the movie cars to do a burnout they had to put nitrous on it (very sad) lets agree the firebirds of the mid to late 70s are cool looking (in a retro way) especially the black 1 in the monster magnent.. space lord video. But pontiac was loast when it came to horsepower(however good torque) do some number compairing betwween pontiac and chevy numbers on horsepower. also for you guys that want to sell your car on ebay or something dont advertise it as a "bigblock" im sorry but there is no such thing as a bigblock poncho and if want to argue with me please tell me the external size difference of say a 350(or 301) and a 400 or 455? See there is no diff. FYI i own a 69 firebird with a 402BB chevy, and if i were to stick the same amount of money i have in that motor into a 455 i might be able to run 13 or 14s but not 12s(ive got nothing in my 402 fancy)

The Trans Am used in the first movie was a '76.
Years ago I saw a special on the cars used narrated by Hal Needham, the director.
The second generation TA's used in the first and second movies were pretty much stock with common modifications and no nitrous.

They ran into trouble with the third movie which used the third gen TA.
It needed far more modification than the earlier TA's

The chevy engine in that was not up to the task and required a total replacement with a built 350, the T-top structure was weak and they blew up rear ends in it.

I believe they used nitrous on the car used in the third Smokey movie only. Those cars, at least in that year, came with at most, a 165 hp Chevy 305, and nitrious was the easiest way to make power.

To the best of my knowledge, the older TA in the first and second movies had well built Pontiac 400's or 455's, but nothing special like nitrous. If I recall, nitrous was not as popular or widely available then to make power than it is now.

Did the Learning Channel specify for which move nitrous was used?

Re: Smokey

Fisrt one: '77, no doubt. Second movie was an '80 Turbo T/a. Third movie was a complete flop, so who cares? It was a Cheviac anyway, not a Pontiac.
