Unhappy Diesel Engine Problems

I have a 1996 1.9 TDi CL Golf, it keeps cutting out, feels like the diesel is switched off. When it happens the rev counter and speedometer go to zero and the oil light flashes on/off. I then have to wait until, witht the ignition switch on, for the glow plug light to flash on then off, this means that the car will then start. This happens 6 or 7 times, then the car seems to work ok until next time. The car starts in the morning fine, and when it is running it runs very well.
The car has 90,000 miles on the clock, and has full service history.
Can you help

Re: Diesel Engine Problems

It could be a bad "ignition" switch.

I have the same problem with my 94 TDI. It's like the diesel is being cut off. Mostly this appears after +/- 5 km (3 mi). I allready replaced the cut off valve on the diesel pump but still had the problem, even connected this valve directly to the + pole of the battery but still had the problem. The engine management does not store any faults. Could be the ignition switch or the main relay (does anybody know the number on this relay?). I anyone knows the answer, please help us out!

Re: Diesel Engine Problems

We didn't have the TDI in the US in '94 so I'm not sure which system is on it. We have alot of trouble with our later models mass air flow sensors. Try these sources:

I have a 1997 Golf CL 1.9 TDi and have experienced exactly the same problems as "Boot". My mate (who used to work for VW for many years) suggested swapping out the two relays that power the ECU (Relays 18 and 109) particularily the Relay-18 as it has been superceed by a different part, plus my mate tells me that this relay has caused problems in the past (not sure for what though). Anyway, I swapped out both relays and no more problems.
