Which Diagnostic Code Reader to Purchase?

I have a 1998 Suburban that has been showing the 'Service Engine Soon' light. Before I take it to a shop, I would like to read the codes myself. How difficult is this to hook up and which brand/model (code reader) would you recommend?

Re: Which Diagnostic Code Reader to Purchase?

Many auto parts stores will hook up with their computers and read it for you, for free! dh
