If you were reffering to using a rear end from at 4th gen car, yes it can be done. If you find what you want and it has rear disc brakes you might as well convert to the disc brakes.
Here's a link to a page at thirdgen.org that discusses how to upgrade to a 4th gen rear end. http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/4thgenrear.shtml It doesn't look like too bad of a project.

Re: posi rear for a 3rd gen
is there any extra costs to convert to disc brakes, besides pads n calipers obviously....and i do not think in pa it is leagal for your tires to exceed the widest point of your wheel lip

I'm not really sure how much it would cost to just upgrade to disc brakes, but if you found a rear end with them already on, I'm sure that it would be significantly cheaper.
I know that in Indiana the tires aren't supposed to stick out farther than the wides part of the quarter panel. I've never measured or anything, but it seems to me like the tires on a third gen have a little extra room before they'd stick out too far.
