rear window-motor busted. need advice
Hey Focus Playas...I've had my 02' ZTS (mach) for just over a year. Not 1 problem at all.....until last week! I walked out to my car in the morning, and noticed that the rear window was down about 3 inches. At first I though, "maybe I left it down?" So I got into my focus, and tried to put up the window. All I got was GRINDING and CLANKING noise, and then the window dropped all the way. So I finally took the door panel off to look inside:
The rear door, has to Steel Cables, each on a pulley. Both cables attach to the window "harness" (plastic) located at the base of the window. Well, it turns out that the plastice holder broke and the cable was just hanging. HMM?? So I tried taking the window out. I managed to get it free from the harness, but can't get it out of the door. Anyone taken the rear window out before? I can't get the darn thing out. I took off all the gaskets/seals, but it still wont come out. The other problem is that the motor seems to be spinning the cables in opposite directions??? Here's what I mean. When you go to put your window up, the "top" cable pulls the window up, as the lower cable releases-thus giving the window slack to move upwards. Well, mine doesn't do that. When the top cable pulls up (to lift up the window), the bottom cable pulls down (trying to lower the window). Is that just a motor gone bad? I've taken door panels off before, but this was the first time I had to "fix" a bad window. So if anyone has ANY advice, please post. Thanks...and sorry about the long post. |

take it to a dealership...i honestly think that you are screwed...it sounds like it was thrown off track or somebody was trying to break into your car for some odd reason

focus window
It can't be the motor is any cable moves at all.
If a cable is moving in the wrong direction, then it has jumped a pulley somewhere. You don't really want to take the window out, because then you would have to figure out how to get it back in again. I just looked it up in my Haynes manual, which was only $15 at the generic parts place, and it is a little too detailed to explain. I suggest you either buy a manual, go to the library and xerox a copy of theirs, or get the local dealer to let you look at their manuals. You may have to take the regulator out, but it comes out through one of the ports in the the inside, towards the bottom. By the way, I think actually there is only one cable, but the motor is in the middle and the 2 ends attach to opposite ends of the window. But that is only a guess from looking at the pictures. |

Yah, I think I'm guessing that either someone tried to break in, or, it was just some weir malfunction. Either way, I looks like i'm gonna have to replace the motor...
Well, thanks for the replies...I'l keep you guys posted. |

motor not bad
No, you do NOT have to replace the motor.
If the motor was bad then nothing electrical would happen when you hit the switch. Since the motor does turn, it is fine. All that is wrong is the cable is on the wrong pulleys. |
