Boost Leak or what?

My friend has a 96 GST and wanted me to post about this problem. He said when he reaches a certain boost level, the car wont go and feels like its running out of gas. I was wondering if any of you have a clue as to what the problem is because hes freaking out. Thanks

Re: Boost Leak or what?

Depending on what mods he has the problem could be the ECU is pulling ignition timing way back if it sees too much knock. Is your friend just running a boost controller and nothing else? Does he have any fuel upgrades at all? What does he have done to it?

Re: Re: Boost Leak or what?

does he have a boost gauge? turbo2nr is right. after 5k rpm or so, boost starts to rapidly drop off because the turbo can't keep up, and he will feel a pretty noticable loss of power, where the rpm's keep going up, but the acceleration is no where near what you think it should be, sorta like loosing gas. getting a boost controller would help a bit, but only a bit.

Re: Boost Leak or what?

If it is stumbling/stuttering (I'm assuming so because of the running out of gas comment) it is almost always an ignition related problem (plugs, plug gap, wires, etc) or a boost leak (see www.vfaq.com to make the tester, and test it either way. Everyone should do this, like, now.)

I've been running my car for about a week now with what I think is a boost leak. I'm waiting for my automotive class to get into gear (haha) and take safety tests so I can use their expensive lifts and get credit for it too. Shouldn't be too hard to check for boost leaks, even though the teacher knows little about turbos.
