sub placement and setup
i am wanting to put my 2 12 inch comp vrs in seperate boxes, one on each side of my trunk. i want to make it look good and sound good, and i also want to make my boxes. i've made a box before to hold both of them but now i want to make better ones. what would be better sealed, ported, or bandpass. i also would like to know if i should wire my subs in parallel or series. thanks

Re: sub placement and setup
making them face each other would kind of cancel each other out and it wouldn't sound all that great. I'd go with a ported box and have someone that knows what they're doing tune the ports. Depending on your amp and voicecoil configuration of your subs, you'll want to decide whether to wire them in parallel or series.

Re: Re: sub placement and setup
would they cancel each other out even if they were facing towards the trunk at an angle and i don't want them to be in a straight up and down box, i want it to have something like a 45 degree angle. also who would tune the ports for me? thanks

Re: sub placement and setup
I don't think it would be bad like that. Just facing them right at each other is a bad idea. As for the ports, I would take it to a knowledgeable shop. I don't know what really goes into tuning a ported box, never watched anyone actually do it. As far as I know, it's just cutting the length of the port to a certain length, how they determine the length is a mystery to me.

i know mtx subs come with a huge specs sheet on that says what size and length port to use for each sub, according to box volume. maybe check that if it comes with the sub. are you thinking of putting your subs like this?
http://www.hyundai-owners.com/images...ture%20016.jpg check this awesome DIY for building a fiberglass box, and then head over to ebay for "fiberglass mat" should you decide to try it out. http://web.njit.edu/%7Ecas1383/glassing2/ |

Re: sub placement and setup
yeah that is what i was thinking only flip it around so they are against the seat facing the trunk. i kind of like it the way it is in the picture though, i don't know, what do you guys think.

Re: sub placement and setup
I'm confused on one thing though...Ok yea I get and know how to actually fiberglass everything but how do you know how big to make it since the box isn't a square and so you don't know how much airspace you have. There has to be a way...

Re: sub placement and setup
As for fiberglass and getting the size right, there are many ways to do it. First of all sealed boxes have a certain amount of give either way on the air space, so if you are within .25 ft 3 you are close enough. Otherwise, using something such as sand or milk jugs used to figure out the exact air space. Geometry class also comes into play as there are formulas for irregular shapes and volume. On to the tuning of ports...port tuning is usually done with a box program. I have a few that will give exact cut lines for everything, and will give you a pretty close reading on how the subs will actually perform in the enclosure. If you have any more ?'s on this, you can email me or hit me up on aim. I can't advertise here so I won't say anymore on this now.

measure out small sizes of sand in bags, and stuff them in the enclosure. or you could just pour it in and then measure what comes out. i dont know if you could pour water in but that would be easiest.

Re: sub placement and setup
lol but what sucks about that is...if you get it all built exactly like you want adn then it's too big or too small...you have to start over or something...Oh well doesnt' really matter to me because of the way I'm mounting my subs...I'll actually build a normal box first. and then just wrap it...simple

using rough calculations with geometry, you should know the approximate volume of the box you wanna build before you even start.
