It allows better airflow by using a larger and less restrictive filter. It also allows more dirt to get into your engine, which helps to cause more engine wear.

Re: purpose of cold air intake

A good intake will do a few things.

Use a lower restriction filter. This frees up (doesn't MAKE) hp because it's less work the engine has to do just to get air in.

Use a straighter, more direct, smoother intake pipe. This also lessens the restriction.

Draw air from a cooler source than the engine bay. The engine bay is quite a hot place when the engine is running. We all know, I'm sure, that cold air is more dense than hot air. More density = more bang. This is why they're called a "cold air intake" or, more rightfully so, a "cool air intake".

I don't care what anyone says, the most you should EVER hope to get out of this mod on an otherwise stock car is 8-10 hp...more so as you do other mods. In my oppinion, this should be the first or second mod you do...either this or exhaust (cat back at LEAST...and no, bigger isn't always better) should always be the first 2 things you do.
