i am getting an 89 gti and want to do a vr6 motor swap due to the 1.8's lack of potential. has anybody done one her and can they give me a ballpark figure on price and what parts i need to get. i really would like to find a step by step guide but cant. if anyone knows of a guide please let me know. my budget is tight so cheap is the way to go. thanks

Re: vr6 swap into 89 gti
Hrmmm... sorry, I don't have the link to a step-by-step anymore, seem to have lost it.
The parts you need... pretty much an entire front clip from an early Vr6. (Corrado/Passat/etc) Other than the obvious things, make sure to also pick up the brakes, and the suspension. And on a side note... "the 1.8's lack of potential"??? Who are you getting your info from, cuz they're full of crap.

here's the deal. there are a couple things that are musts unless you like to fabricate.
# 1 You need the crossmember out of a VR6 Corrado, Nothing else will work. has to be an SLC corrado. #2 You need the complete wiring harness and guage cluster if you can get it. #3 You need the hydraulic pedal assembly out of a Corrado vr6 as well. #4 you need the cat from a vr6 #5 you are gonna need the shifter assembly from the model and generation of car that your donor engine came out of. the rest is just preference. i would find a complete set of SLC Corrado brakes including the spindels and axles. unless you want to buy 5 lug wheels. the a2 spindels will not fit the vr6 axles. BahnBrenner makes engine mounts for that too, i would go with thier solid motor mounts. you are also gonna want big brakes, and stiffer aftermarket shocks. lot more weight to a VR6 that there is an 8V. if i think of anything else i will let you know |

Re: vr6 swap into 89 gti
You're gonna have a hard time throwin a 24v Vr6 into it, if you don't realize that the 24v Vr6 wasn't available on any of the cars you mentioned. It's only available in the US in the 2002+ Jetta GLI and GTI Vr6.

The 24V will not fit in an A2 without serious modification. I saw a 24V into A3 conversion in process and the entire front end was being rebuilt from tubing to accomodate that engine. another thing is that the 6 speed that the 24V often runs, just straight won't fit in there. Corrado is the only way to do it easily. You can get corrado parts from the dealership and some parts stores, but it will cost you an arm and a leg. and remember that an A2-A3 swap will require SLC corrado parts, they have to be from a VR6 corrado. A g60 has the same crossmember you already have!! A2-A3 VR6 Swaps work because there is a car in there that isn't a generation car. the corrado was available with an A3 engine and a most A2 body design. Between A3 and A4 there is no such car, and between A2 and A4 its apples to oranges. I don't think you will be able to put that 24V into an A2. If you do, it will certainly be very original! Can't wait to see it done!
as far as price on the original post, i forgot to mention it! A VR6 Swap can cost anywhere from 1-2Grand if you have help and get parts cheap, all the way up to 6 grand or more if you have to pay for help wiring and such, not to mention finding the VR6 corrado parts. |
