Re: engine swap... what else do i need?
i think the biggest thing you might need is a transmission, because to my knowledge, the stock one will not bolt right up to the 5.7. i could be wrong, this is just what i hear

I agree with Marc04, you are more than likely your going to need to get a different transmission. Odds are that your going to have to swap the computer and wiring harness too. I was talking to a guy in one of my classes the other day who payed a shop to do almost the same swap on his 95 Camaro. He said that the shop didn't to a very good job with the swap and right now he has Camaro that can't drive anywhere. Not saying that it can't or shouldn't be done, but make sure that you know what you are getting yourself into first.
By the way, if you do decide to go ahead with the swap, don't just 'get rid' of your 3.4 engine. You might be able to get a little bit of money for it by selling it to someone who has an 82' to 92' Firebird or Camaro with a 2.8 or 3.1 V6. The 3.4 can be used as a replacement for the 2.8's and 3.1's with a few slight modifications.

Well you will no doubt have to change the computer and wiring harness..i guarantee that much and I am gonna chech for sure on the tranmission...and also..whatever tranny you get, auto. or Manual, you have to make sure that the computer is set up for that tranny, you cannot interchange them.

Would a different rear really be necessary? If I recall correctly the the rear ends and the drive shafts are the same size. Yes, the V6 rear end may be a little weaker, but assuming you don't totally abuse it should hold up. I'd think that the tires would loose traction before the gears would break. (assuming you don't have slicks)

Re: engine swap... what else do i need?
if the battery is older which im assuming it is it will not be big enough, and he is goin from a 6 to a 8 so he is looking at a lot more power to b produced. i went from the 305 to a 350 and my battery was not sufficent...i mention a few minor thing, but they were things i diddnt take into account when switching my motor

To swap you'll most likely need:
350 longblock plus propper mounts...count on none of your factory accessories being able to bolt up. ECU and complete uncut wiring harness. If you have a 5spd then any ECU made for your engine will work. If you have an auto you need to have an auto ECU...it should also match the year of your body. Also count on possably having to change the body harness in order to get the ECU to work power your various interior goodies. You'll prolly also have to swap the instrument cluster and definitely the fuel pump. The transmission will need to me changed...as I'm fairly certain they don't bolt up...considering the variences in parts numbers between the two. The auto MIGHT bolt up...couldn't find anything definite on it. If you go with an auto finding one out of the same year model would be advisable. The V6's rear is found on a number of cars...including various toyotas...it's good for typical normal driving...but if you intend to start pushing for lots of power or drive hard regularly an LS1's rearend isn't that expensive or hard to find. You should find a new driveshaft reguardless...but it should work fine. That's all that comes to mind right now. |
