Re: '02 grinding/scrubbing noise when turning in 4wd

Am I glad you posted, I have the same problem on my '02. The dealership told me they compared it to a '01 4WD and it did the same thing to not to worry. I am not so sure that I am ok with this, so I may take it to another dealership.

I haven't taken mine to the stealer yet, for fear of exactly what yours said. I'm sorry, but that noise isn't "normal" and can't be good... That song and dance will surely go away as soon as the warranty runs out. Once that happens, it will magically turn into a $3000 disaster...

Full time 4wd? Possible tire scrub problem? Where is noise coming from? Olds bravadas had this problem for a while and they repaired it one pf two ways: new sensor or change fluid in transfer case a few times. Hope this helps.More info please.

Definetly not tires. Some sort of a mechanical srape/moan sound. This is my first Chevy, so I don't know what they call this 4wd system, but it has dedicated 4-high and 4-low positions, but also has 2wd and AUTO modes... It will make the noise during a turn in anything other than 2wd. There is not bucking or jerking associated with it, but there is an appreciable power loss, which I would presume is directly related to whatever I am hearing drag.

Carrier bearing dude. I know before I had my differential rebuilt it was doing the exact same thing you are describing. Stealer says, iss normal man. You lookin good in that Tahoe man!!

Whoa, are you talking carrier bearing as in the differential center section carrier? As there are two in there, is there a side that has a history of being bad? Is it just a bad setup from the factory? There is no gear whine, so this strikes me as odd... This is gonna take some serious convincing at the stealership...

Re: '02 grinding/scrubbing noise when turning in 4wd

I think that it must be something bad from the factory cause my truck was out of warranty and they didn't put any fight at all about picking up the bill. Maybe you could have them put the mechanical ears on it. Thats what they did on mine. They knew right away that something in the differential was not right.

Cool Dry Grinds.

You don't give enough information to really form much of an opinion. All I can say is that all 4 wheel drives like slippery surfaces. That is what they are for.
