Smile Tow Hooks

I see tow hooks on the web ranging from $10 a piece to $100 for the set. Do I need just the $100 ones that come with a kit, or can I use the $10 ones? And are the mounting holes already in the frame?

On a uni-Body XJ, there is not enough strength in the metal "frame" for the demands of a tow hook bolted directly to it.

C4x4 and other companies have a tow hook kit that consists of the brackets to bolt everything to.

I can send pics if ya wanna see what they are.

I picked mine up from a junk yard for 30 bucks for everything including bolts. I did get new grade 8 bolts for extra confidence.

A kit with brackets is a MUST HAVE!!
I got mine from the Jeep dealer, all brackets, tow hooks etc. The kit also was strong enough to bolt a winch to as well.

Also, get the painted ones, if you can. The chrome ones are slightly weaker due to hydrogen embrittlement during the plating process, (in theory anyways)

Re: Tow Hooks

I bought some with clips for my 97 country. I can't figure out what to actually bolt them to.

They have three holes through them. My bumper has two holes.

Help!

Re: Tow Hooks

Tow hooks are the BOMB. ONLY if their installed correctly. I have the hooks and kit from Rubicon Express. It bolts directly to the uni-body. One word of wisdom, DON'T TRY TO YANK ANYONE OUT WITH THEM! You WILL lose your front bumper!!! After you install them, find a GOOD welder to run a bead along the bracket for extra security. Metal is thin, but it can be done .

I installed the tow hook set from Rustys Off road and they work great. They come with the brackets to mount to the unibody and the instructions on their website show you exactly how to install them. They were $75 vs. $120+ from the dealer.
