Exclamation /94 formula firebird, BIG problem.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to this problem on my '94 formula firebird.

First off, we can't get codes to tell us whats wrong. The general problem is, whenever the car heats up, it cuts out, and wont start again until the engine is cold. Once the engine is cold, it will run until the engine heats up and then cuts out.
-We have replaced the fuel pump
-Replaced the distributor (which is what the pontiac dealer said it was)
-The catalytic convertor was breaking down inside, so we knocked out the honeycombs in that ... could that be the problem?
Before I started replacing modules, I was wondering if anyone on here had any idea what could be wrong or if anyone has had this problem before. If you need anymore info about the situation, please dont hesitate to ask or email me. [email protected]

I would also look at the thermostat perhaps but also the radiator. Also, i would also say to replace the catalytic convertor. Not sure if any of these could be the reasons, but i would look at these things.

How hot does the engine get when it cuts off? Check the temp. gauge. Is it over 230 or 240?

I am 86.2% sure it is not the cat because mine is punched with nothing in it and it doesn't give me one problem on my 95 Z28. As for as why it shuts off when it gets warmed up its really hard to say but it sounds like a sensor problem somewhere.

Sounds like it could be the Optispark to me.

Like was said before, the cats would not be the problem, gutting a cat would not cause the vehicle to shut itself off until it was cooled down again...

Re: /94 formula firebird, BIG problem.

This has to be a problem with your ground or a short somewhere near your coil and the reason I know this is because you stated that your car is stalling or shutting off without giving a code the only 2 causes which would cause your car to stall are bad ground due to either rust, corrosion or loose battery terminal connection(the reason this doesn't give a code is because the computer get's cut off before it know's what's going wrong) and the other is a short past your ignition module which is where your computer register's it voltage, if this happen past this point which would be your coil your computer would be unaware of the problem. I am surprised your dealer could not tell you this

I used to have a 95 Talon, but I blew the engine. I had gotten the engine replaced, but when it was put in, it was having the same problem as yours. Needless to say, after about a grand in various mechanics telling me they couldnt figure it out, finally one did something to my computer that fixed it. I'm no gearhead, but your problem sounds awfully familiar.

Re: /94 formula firebird, BIG problem.

My wifes Bonneville was doing this and I spent over $1500 and everything from a new fuel pump to 3 different ECMs....
NOW want to know what it was? A $3 relay under the dash that controls the fuel pump. It would heat up then short out. Might try it ..it is a cheap thing to try for sure. I actually fixed it myself after taking it to 3 different Pontaic dealers and several regular mechanics.
