Need advice on what catback to get

I want to buy a catback for my 97 Maxima and I just can't seem to decide on what to get. I don't really want the catback to sound too ricey. What are your opinions. I was thinking about going with the OBX catback because it is cheap, but I want to hear what you guys think.

Re: Need advice on what catback to get

i really liked the stillen cat-back i had on my 4th gen. it had a bullnose tip so it didn't have that raspy rice sound. if you plan on going with a y pipe eventually or if u already have one, get something with a resonator like a catt-man. when i finally do an exhaust on here i'm going cat-man mid pipe(s) and y pipe and a stillen muffler. i can send you a videoclip w/ sound of my 95 with a stillen catback and weapon-r intake if you wanna hear how it sounded, it's only like 3 mb. you mostly hear intake but the exhaust just makes it sound deeper. pm me with an email address if you want me to send it.

I am in the same situation right now too. I don't want something that sounds hyped out, just something of good build quality with a heavy guage metal so it will last a long time.

BP2K2Max -I would love to hear the sounds of your Stillen exhaust if you don't mind sending it to me as well. Let me know. THX!

Apexi WS. You would have to weld on an extra O2 Sensor, but it sounds very nice!! Also fairly quiet.

why would you have to weld in an 02 sensor? those are on the down-pipe.

There is one in the rear pipe as well, it monitors what the fron two are doing. This is the one that often freezes up and has to be replaced when you get a new catback system.

Tell me something, if possible to describe, tell me how loud is this system? Can it be heard at idle or just when you punch it or can you hear it when you just drive normal? I know the question is a little nebulus, but I don't want something loud and obnoxious, I would accept throaty but not loud and racy. Just want something tasteful and that won't kill my mileage.

Also is this system a thicker guage metal than the stock system? To be honest the stock system from Nissan is as much as this so I may buy one of these instead.

Isn't the WS only made for 95-96?

Re: Need advice on what catback to get

it's definitely thicker than stock, and is more or less unnoticable at idle. i know how you're feeling dude i had this on order and my friend had just put a cat-back on his civic and he let me drive it and i was totally apprehensive, almost scared, cuz i thought my car would sound the same way. it didn't. it has a real nice tone to it. throaty and muscular. when i first put it on it was kinds quiet but once the fiberglass and all got blown out and it got it's real tone, i loved it. you'll still hear your intake(assuming you have one) and the exhaust just makes the perfect noise to accompany the intakes growl. i know it's significantly quieter than almost all greddy's and apexi's.

plain and simple i never had one complaint or regret about my stillen, and i'm gonna probably get another for this car. And i'll be the first person in a car to point and laugh at an obnoxiously loud fartbox in another lane.

Go with either the Frankencar or Cattman.

Would it be stupid to just buy a muffler and a ypipe and just forget about the bpipe? Also would a muffler look stupid on a car that hasn't been lowered yet and has stock gxe weels on it? Thanks for the replies.

I have a custom made b-pipe with a flowmaster 40 series muffler on my max. It sounds really nice (Deep tone) except when downshifting (raspy sound).

Where can a factory catback system be bought for a reasonable price?

If you replace your muffler and your y-pipe your car will be obnoxiously loud. A better choice would be y-pipe and b-pipe with the stock muffler I think, unless you want a VERY loud car. Y-pipes make a lot of noise.
