Life Sucks

Life sucks big hairy... well, you get my point. Anyways tho, I was driving down the road last night about 1:30 A.M. going about 50mph and came up on a curve. This curve I've taken probably a thousand times before and coming around it about 45-50mph was pretty routine. The speed limit on the road is only 30 so lets say I usually drive a little fast on this road. Anyways, I come around the curve(not turning to sharply to make sure I don't oversteer) and I guess I hit a patch of ice or something but the car just kept going into the other lane even when I turned the wheel pretty hard to the right. When the car finally got traction my whole front end shot off to the right and I immediately hit the brakes and overcorrected back to the left. When I did, my brakes must have went out or something because I slid into a ditch doing at least 40. The slope of the ditch was a least a 6 foot drop so my car went almost straight down vertical into it. I hit the bottom of the ditch and my car did an instant flip flop, my rear hit the ground and sent my front end flying straight up. When the car came back down i bounced about another 30 feet untill the car finally slammed down into about 3 feet of mud and stopped. Lets just say I started freaking out like crazy. I don't know how long I was in the car before I got out, I'm not even sure I was awake when the car stopped, but when I got out I looked first thing at my wheels. The wheels didn't seem like anything was wrong with them at first, but I caught a stare at my front bumber and it was about half torn off and my hood was tore off from the latch and was bent up at an angle. I can't give an exact estimate of what all happend to the car, but what I noticed was the front bumper was pulled half-off and was scratched all to hell, the hood latch was broke and the hood was slightly bent upward, my gaurds and covers under the car were almost completely torn off(around the engine), I'm guessing my wheels were scratched all the unholy hell(I couldn't tell because it was so dark, I hit a barb wire fence when i flew out of the ditch and it popped at least one of my front tires(almost brand new Khumo Ecstas) I'm guessing my radiator was busted because the car started running hot when I somehow drove it out of the field I was in, there was antifreeze everywhere so I'm guessing it was either the radiator or a hose had been cut. I dont know the rest of the damage but when my car was being towed, it looked like there was more damage done around the front end and under the engine.... But anyways, this really sucks because this car was my BABY!!!!!(99' Civic Ex) I've almost never did anything to that car that I didn't know what would be the result. Now my Baby is broken and won't be on the road for probably at least a month This curve has probably been the cause of at least 30 or more wrecks in the last 5 years and the thing I hate the most is that I always told myself that I would be fine coming around the 2 curves in that spot in the road as long as I stayed under 70 because I had coilovers and and a brand new set of all-weather Kuhmo Ecstas. I've taken worse curves at the same speed(45-50mph) and had no problems, but the fact that it was about 12 degrees outside probably didn't help road conditions (nor my chances of taking the curve) any better, and also the curve has a downward slope toward the ditch I flew into, so I had no support from the road's structure at all. But all in all lets just say I got a little cocky because I was in a hurry, I was taking a note to a friend and was in a hurry to get there and give it to her so I could go home, and just took the curve a little faster than I should have given road conditions, and now my Baby is broken and I'll be hitchin rides for a while becuase it will take at least a month for the damage to be fixed.

Sorry to hear about your car, man. We all get cocky and do stupid stuff, and occasionally it bites you in the ass.

Re: Life Sucks

you never want to slam your brakes when you're out of control. It sends all of your weight to the front of the car, so when you let off the brakes it sends the car shooting in whichever direction you have the tires pointing.

Sorry about your car meng

Just be thankful you didn't endanger anyone else's life by driving like an idiot. I don't feel the least bit sorry for you.

Re: Life Sucks

Well I could tell you all the things that you did wrong (over-compensating, slamming brakes, etc.) but that wouldn't help your situation anyways. And it's not like we think about these things in the flash of a second. I've been in a few mishaps myself and it all happens so fast. All I can say is, I've been there. I lost my car for a month after I got in a wreck due to repairs, and then I lost it for another 3 months from my parents as punishment! It will be back to normal one day...

Patience is a virtue.

Re: Life Sucks

I was carelessly driving. I was on a busy road in the morning and I tried to change lanes because of a trailor stopping in front of me. I side-swiped an Explorer who was in my blind spot.

Re: Life Sucks

I'm glad as hell that I'm ticket free and accident free.

I've been pulled over lke 8 times, and only 2 of those 8 times could they have actually given me a ticket. 1 time for speeding, and 1 time for running a stop sign (I just didn't make a complete stop - but I made sure it was clear before I pulled out).

Every time I've been pulled over, I put my hands behind my head and interlace my fingers - if you can roll your window all the way down, and get your hands behind your head with your fingers interlaced before the cop gets out of his car they'll more then likely let you go unless this cop happens to know you in the wrong way.

Well fine then, I never asked for your sympathy. I was just wanting to let everyone know about my accident because some people on this forum care about other people and their cars, unlike somebody apparently.... But anyways, I don't get why your saying your thankful I didn't endanger anyone else's life by driving like an idiot. Have you never driven more than 5mph over the speed limit and have you never street raced before?(because both of them endanger other people's lives)If you can truthfully say yes to both of these, then I'll shake your hand because I don't personally know 2 people in this world that haven't done one or the other, so if you say no to either one... Keep your comments about my driving to yourself.

Re: Life Sucks

Sorry to hear man. Hope you get it back on the road soon and learn a lesson from it. I know i'm guilty of speeding every once in a while, just be more safe and you won't be so sorry. Let us know about the repairs and stuff.

First of all, if you're going a mere 5 miles over the speed limit, you're not really endangering any one's life - in fact cops (unless they truely feel like being a dick on a particular day) won't even cite you for going 5 miles over the speed limit (6 is starting to take a chance - I've been pulled over for going 7 over, but didn't get a ticket for it - I'm telling you it's the hands behind the head w/ fingers interlaced technique). Yes, I have street raced, but it was in a pretty controlled environment - no cross traffic, and this street has very little traffic, and there's a landscaping border between the opposing traffic and the two lanes that I'd race on - the only person who's life would be at risk would be my own, or the person lined up next to me. I NEVER drive like that around hilly curves or curves at all - NO MATTER the road conditions. In fact when it's the time of year when we are getting our first rains (when the roads are at their slickest - if you live where it doesn't get cold enough to snow), I make a point of going a little bit below the speed limit in such conditions if no one's behind me.

Well, Thanks for the info Mr. Safety Man. I was just trying to make a valid point that everyone has done something a little bit crazy or stupid once in a while, its just that I was in a hurry and wasn't trying to be crazy or stupid(i was actually paying quite a bit of attention, I just couldn't hold the car on the road) I just was angry and thought that it was kinda weird that when I wasn't trying to show off or anything, I had a wreck.

No hard feeling man, I was just really upset because my car has been my life since I broke up with my last g/f about a month ago. I just didn't want to hear from someone that I fucked up because I really didn't, there was absolutely nothing I could do about what happend. I could have maybe slowed down a bit, but the same thing probably would have happend.

Re: Life Sucks

Ive gotten my self out of two wrecks with my ebrake when my car didnt turn with the tires and kept going strait almost off the road. I just ebraked it and turned away from the ditch so that it put my back end where it needed to be and made my car go strait in the right direction you just got to be carful and not over compensate

Re: Life Sucks

I can understand how I sounded like an ass, but when you're going 15-20 miles over the speed limit, it may not feel like you're going all that much faster then the speed limit, and it will give you a false sense of safety and control over your car, throw in a curvy road, and some ice, and along with your excessive speed it was only an accident waiting to happen.

BTW, I am an excellent driver, and I hate to be in a car when it's moving and I'm not in the driver's seat. Sue me.
