Question Reverse in a Six-Speed

A couple days ago my friends and i were looking at some new jettas that people had modified and the shifters had caught my attention. most of the cars were six-speed and i didnt see any reverse. i was told that you have to push the shift knob down and then put it in first gear. now my question is is this true or a bunch of bs.

btw i am new to all these performance stuff these peoapl do to cars and am just getting interested in modifying cars.

Re: Reverse in a Six-Speed

every VW i've heard of, and or driven, mine included, reverse has always always been down, and actually next to first, but it looks like its in first.

i've seen a 6 speed vw in my stepdads shop once...

and i was tempted to trade it with my jetta.

Re: Reverse in a Six-Speed

It is the same as any german 5 speed. Reverse is not in 1st gear. It is down and left (next to first).

Re: Reverse in a Six-Speed

i dont know about the new new jetta's, but my 03 1.8t is a manual, and you have to push down on the knob and then push over towards first, its not goin into the first gear slot, when you push it down a spring opens another slot for reverse.

This is the SAT question for VW's: Where's reverse? You heard exactly right. In a VW, you push the knob down, all the way to the left PAST the first gear gate, and up. Once you get used to it I think it's better than behind 5th like most I've seen. I've heard a couple of stories about trying to shift into fourth and hitting reverse. My dad almost did it in his mazda (the positions are really loose) but the gate stopped him thank gawd.
