axle swap problem

right now im swapping the drivers side axle in a 4th gen honda civic. ive done everything up to the part where the new axle slides in, it doesnt. the tip of the axle slides into the trans but it doesnt fully snap into place, only half of it goes in. i checked visually and nothing is really blocking it from going in, i mean i just took out the other axle. i dont know what it could be or where to go from here. any help will be appreciated, thanks.

Are you sure you got the right axle? If you did, put some lube on it. Then try it. If that doesnt work, put more lube on it, then beat it with a hammer. That always seems to help.

haha. thanks for the quick reply. however im 98% sure that its the correct axle, i mean its pretty much identical to the axle i swapped out cept for the torn boots etc. shit i just want to get this thing in.

could it be the wrong axle? like is there a very super small difference that i would not notice when visually examining it? thanks.

It doesnt go in easy, heres what you should try. Put it through your hub first and put the nut on the end. Then get the other end in the transmission as good as you can and then grab a hold of the hub (brake and all) and just start slamming it in there, take it out a bit, then push it in real hard. It might take a couple tries but should go right in. Good luck.

Thats because you have to get it past the retaining ring that is on the end.

What I always do is slide it in and get it as straight as possible. Take a rubber mallet and put the rubber part in the palm of my hand and just punch it once and it always slides right in, that has never failed me.

thanks everyone for the replies and advice. i got it in with a little more work on it, just pushing and pulling, using hammers etc. car drives great now, thanks again.

I got a bad axle from Autozone. It took me two days to realize this, but the splines after the retaining ring were about 1mm offset from the splines before the retaining ring, so the axle would go in about 5mm . I thought I was doing something completely wrong, but once I had a non defective axle it popped right in (and I learned the valuable lesson to never use AUTOZONE parts anymore.)
