my civic grinds going into 3rd
i dont know why but when ever i shift into 3rd at high rpms it grinds, i make sure the clutch is all the way in. if i shift slow at high rpms it grinds a little bit. i dont under stand what going on. is my clutch going out? it feels fine in all the other gears and wont grind except in 3rd. i have a 2000 civic lx, stock.

Re: my civic grinds going into 3rd
You probably already tore up 3rd gear/synchro's & I'm sure if you tore up 3rd, 2nd is probably beat up too. Check your fluid level, if it's low filling/changing will not fix a problem already there as some seem to think.

Re: my civic grinds going into 3rd
yah it sounds like your synchro is done. Take it easy shifting into 3rd, you don't wanna completely blow that gear and not have it anymore. Friend's car is missing 3rd and 4th now and it really sucks to drive it around town where the speed limit is 30-35 mph

Re: my civic grinds going into 3rd
Synchro's are rings with notches that align the gears for "smooth" shifting. It can be fixed by replacing the synchro/gear & it's not cheap for the parts or labor if needed. IMO it cheaper/easier to replace the trans with a rebuilt or used trans.
Most shops will charge you a tear down/removal fee of +/-4.0hrs labor - once the trans it out they open & inspect to see what parts are needed. Once that is known, add the parts plus another +/-4.0hrs labor for rebuilding/installing. check out www.howstuffworks.com to learn how a manual trans works http://www.binghamtonlife.com/manual...es/91-13-8.jpg http://www.binghamtonlife.com/manual...es/91-13-9.jpg Internal manual trans diagram Good thing it's not a Honda CVT trans - that would cost about $5000+ to replace |
