Re: No Internet!!!

Might need a little more information before we can help. Do you have a pc and a laptop networked together with the wireless internet? Make sure you have the router connected correctly, and the pcmcia card in your laptop correctly. Than if that doesn't work uninstall the wireless devices and reinstall to make sure the drivers were correctly installed. But thats just a shot into the wind without more information. What operating systems are on the computers, are they compatible with the wireless devices that you are using? What do you use for a internet service provider?

Read the router manual and see there are any directions for configuring it via a web browser. If there are, plug in the IP address to a web browser on your laptop. If you get to a configuration screen you know that the connection between the laptop and your router is ok, but it needs to be configured differently.

Cloak's advise is good.. also running the internet setup wizard on a broken connection can sometimes restore it.

Under XP to change hardware stuff, right click on my computer, then the hardware tab and device manager. Select the hardware item and hit remove... i think.. too lazy to go into other room. When you reboot it should find the new hardware.

Do you have an IP address? I find out, go into start > my network places. Find and click ONCE on your wireless card. In the mid-low left hand corner of the screen, does it say you have an IP address?

Re: No Internet!!!

What type of machine are you using? Does it have intergrated wireless, or do you have a card?

Re: No Internet!!!

I would start out with re-installing the card in just the laptop, chances are the pc and the router are configured fine if they've been working this whole time. XP is really touchy with wireless cards and I know alot of people have had trouble with it, I don't have XP running on my wireless network so I don't think I'm much help in this problem.

Microsoft released a patch for it in their updates, search the microsoft website and it should fix most of the problems which are wireless related.

Or another option is to wait till service pack 2 is released and it will fix that problem and other associated problem.

If there is any trouble relating microsoft problems, search their database first, in most cases a solution would have either been provided for you or you can lodge a technical support as after all you own a copy of windows thus your eligable for technical support from them.

Re: No Internet!!!

After you install XP, especially the home version, if you have any devices connected your machine other than the standard Keyboard, Monitor, and mouse, it locks up the OS on its first boot. So for your laptop you should have taken out the pcmcia card before you installed the OS. After the OS is installed and you have booted it up and gone through all that other stuff, then insert your pcmcia card into the slot and XP should find it and allow it to work properly.

What kind of router do you have? Also, was Win98 hardcoded (IP and DNS put in manually) for your network settings or was it configured to use DHCP?

If your router has a web-based interface, then make sure your IP and DNS range is set to DHCP - or autodetect. Otherwise it'll see it has a connection, but won't be able to find the router. I think XP mucks with the network settings when you install it. Also, run the Network Wizard to tell XP you are setting up a home network through a router/gateway. This not only allows XP to set itself up for network sharing, but I believe will set all your settings back to DHCP (autodetect).

Once in DHCP, depending on the router, you should be able to access the router's IP through your web browser if it has a web-based interface (such as Linksys routers). From there, get your network settings and either leave your PC in DHCP or hardcode the settings into Windows XP. Your router may also have a wireless security key (depending on the type of router you have) which you will have to input for your new OS to allow it work properly. It really just depends on how the router is set up.
