FD3S, Best Turbo For 500rwhp?

I asked a local performance shop guy what the best turbo upgrade woud be for the 3rd. Gen. RX-7 to hit the 500rwhp mark and he said to go with an HKS T51R-Kai. What do you think? I'm getting ready to sell my GSX (built for drag racing) to buy a 94' RX-7 (to be built for road race courses and drifting) and I'm trying to find a turbo that will produce 500rwhp (with the right supporting mods, of course) and not have to push a whole ass load of boost. I know that most people would tell me to go with a T-78 but there's too much turbo lag for my taste. This car will be built to rape the bung holes of helpless Highway Viper drivers. What do you think???

if you want this car to "rape the bungholes of helpless highway viper drivers", then get the biggest turbo that you can find. However, if you want it for drifting and road courses, i would suggest keeping the twin turbo setup, but upgrading the turbos so that you can keep the responsiveness as opposed to one big ass turbo. In my opinion, 500rwhp is a little excessive for drifting and road courses, but if you just want to rape those viper drivers on the highway, then get the big ass single turbo.

Yah, it's kind of impossible to achieve a balance between Highway power and road race responsivness. But...Imamura's J-Spec. car has about 500Hp and he's ranked #1 on the points list. I'm also very mindfull of reliability issues and by going to a single turbo system most of the vacume hoses and solunoids are eliminated. Now before you go clowning about how 500Hp is going to make the motor unreliable I've already thought of the setup I'm going to run. XS Engineering built motor, Cryo treated & shotpeened housings, street ported, 3mm Apex seals, reinforcing dowl rods, Cosmos fuel pump, Blitz 850cc primary & 1600cc secondary injectors, HKS twin power ignition modual, APEXi Power FC, Blitz SBCi-D, HKS V-Mount intercooler/radiator (coolest running system available), Blitz intake, HKS downpipe, HKS Titanium exhaust. There are probably a few things I forgot to list but with this setup and a whole lot of good tuning, running 350Hp on low boost should be extremely reliable and in the event that I need to I can crank up the boost to 500Hp and not be worried about blowing up.

It's going to be a long process. I'm not one of those guys that can go out and buy an $18K car and drop $30K in mods in 6 months. I'm going to get a Geo Metro or something to drive to and from work and when it snows. If it takes 5 years to build it to my specs. in 5 years I'll have one bad ass car.

I say its a great idea, I'd also say upgrade your twin turbo setup instead of a huge turbo.

I am the same way... I have all my plans for making my 91 non-turbo to get about 225-250 hp but I was pressed for money to get a stage 1 clutch when mine went out but my plans will only take about 1 year to a year and a half (maybe 2 years depending on what else I decide to do as I go along) to complete since its a lot less to do.
