Race Advice

I was reccently challenged by a guy a school with a 96 Supra Twin Turbo to a race. He put 700$ down saying he could beat my ass. He has an exhaust system and a down pipe, other than that it's bone stock.

Im running a 92 5.0, with AFR 185 heads a E303 Cam, ford racing drive shaft and rockers an edelbrock Intake manifold, 3.73 gear, T56 Trans, stage III clutch from steeda, a Turbonetitics 9psi turbo kit, and a 75hp ZEX Nitrous kit. although Ive never shot the juice. I dont even know if I want to, my dad says it's safe but Im not too sure about that... lol Either way alot of people have been talking about this event and are already placing bets all against me. Ive never lost a race against anything Ive run into on the street with my current set up. although I dont think he's telling me the truth about his car and I dont know if I should take the bet without being sure. Supras arent generally intimidating although Ive heard alot of hype about this guy in the past two weeks that word got out.

With all the parts you have, they should be making enough power to split the factory block(450-500rwhp), which is enough for a mid 11 to high 10 second timeslip unlesss you have street tires and stock suspension. With only full exhaust, he might be in the 375hp range.

Does the guy with the Supra know about your turbo kit? If he does and still wants to wager a whole $700, then I would bet he has alot more in it than he's letting on. Try to get a look under his hood. They dont launch for crap due to the IRS, but pull extremely hard once underway and the turbos spool.

I wont say one way or the other if you should race. This is more of a heads up on what you might expect.

What does a 400hp and a 700hp Supra have in common, Mid 12s

Your cars sounds like it has the power, it will come down to driving skills, and tire choice.

What tires are you running? Is it just 1/4 mile? If its going to be a top end shootout, he will kick your butt.

Supras dont hook for crap, like what speedfreak mentioned.

Re: Race Advice

you should whoop him pretty good.
don't forget the classic 10 min. tune up.
(take all the crap out of your car, ditch the sway bar, ice the intake, etc)

Put it this way, if he has those as his only mods, you should toast him in the 1/4.
Do not run top end, Supras are a lot more aerodynamic.

The block is a new one from summit. I didnt think my old one was gonna handle the mods with its 213,000mi odometer read. Im use drag radials in the summer cause it doesnt like to bite with the all weathers it has now. He says he wants to run the quater mile. All my suspension and under carrage parts are direct from Steeda. I have their five link suspension kit, tokico adj shocks and struts, and 4 wheel disc brakes from Baer. Ive thought of ever contingency for this car all the way down to the poly urathane engine and suspension mounts. I blew 2 trans. witht the T5 and decided every piece had to be as strong as the one before it.

make sure you get a look under this guy's hood before you even think about taking this bet. with the mods you listed, along with his, i'd say you got him. BUT, i wouldn't be willing to risk that much money. it may even come down to driver skill. then again, i don't have that much drag race experience, so bottom line, just play it safe.

Re: Race Advice

question about the AFR 185's. i've heard a lot of people say that the 185's are to big for a 302/306. I've never heard of heads being to "big" for a motor. can someone clear this up for me?

The AFR 185s require some piston modification for the valves to clear, if you're not ready for a hot set up go with the AFR 165s. Depends on how crazy you plan on getting. I went a lil over the top with my car but Im happy with the 185's performance. Also AFRs 185s are emissions legal which sealed the deal for me.

On a side note...
Today on the way home from Barrington land of the rich overpriveledged snobs.... I came across 3 cars on the highway, a Neon SRT-4 an Integra and an Evo. The Neon kept playing with me till I romped on the pedal, my gf says the look on his face was priceless when he saw the old 5.0 taking his over priced piece of crap to school. The Evo which I was hoping would do something left me alone... I was getting ever so excited to challenge Japan's latest super car... Although it couldve been a Lancer with Evo badges. Or he just wasnt as stupid as he looked. I used this time as a prelude to Supra's challenge.

I dunno I think I may take this challenge cause I did some research and it seems Supras have horrid traction and cant muster anything better than high 12's on HP as high as 1000. I just finished my car recently and am not sure of it's total performance but Im sure I can run better than high 12s on Nitto Radials. Right now it's got some shit all weather tires so it can get me from point a to b on the days I need to drive it. It's my only car so I actually have to brave it through winter 3days a week to get to work. It's pretty much a 0 traction car but Im shocked at it's ability to not slide into a poll. Well back to the subject of the matter Im gonna take the bet cause I need to stay with my original train of thought that imports aint shit but a stain in your underpants. I plan on getting a scanner soon so I can get some pics of my car on here. Sofar all my check goes towards gas and school now....
