S-10 Blazer Squeaky Rear Window

My 1988 S-10 Blazer has a squeaky rear window/tail gate. I know this is a common problem in this model. I have tried everything I can think of, including: (1) putting a special silicon lubricant on all the weather stripping, (2) replacing the hatch window U-lock mechanism, and (3) replacing all the weather stripping. Each time the "fix" seems to work for awhile and then the squeaking returns. I am sure there is a simple solution. Someone please tell me! Thanks. Lowell

Re: S-10 Blazer Squeaky Rear Window

does your tailgate have a spare tire on it? my blazer had one and it squeeked very badly and i thought for sure it was the glass, but not so....if you grease the part where the bar attaches, or rests, on the tailgate part the noise will stop. hope that helped

Lowell....My Blazer was doing the same thing. I set the adjustment for the window lock mechanism (the lock that the u-latch goes into) in the tailgate as tight as possible and it seemed to solve the problem for me.

Hope this helps....

Re: S-10 Blazer Squeaky Rear Window

A tab of grease on the u-hook where it contacts the latch. Also spray some oil or grease on the hinges at bottom of tailgate, these will make noise that can't be pinpointed sometimes.

Dear Dr. Blazer,

I think I have isolated my problem and that I need to adjust the window lock mechanism (make it tighter). Do you have any advice for making this adjustment or is it intuitive, i.e., when I take off the paneling will the adjustment process be obvious?

Thanks,

Lowell

Lowell....The lock adjustment is fairly obvious after pulling the finish panel from the tailgate. There are 2 nuts on studs which face the left side of the gate.Just undo these and adjust the lock mechanism to where ever you like. This helped my squeeking problem. I also replaced the pins in the tailgate hinges as they were getting very worn and allowed the gate to move up and down as I drove.

Dear Dr. Blazer,

Your instructions were clear and easy to follow. I adjusted the latch which makes for a tighter fit when the tailgate glass is closed and now the squeak is gone. I plan to replace the pins in the tailgate hinges also. Can one buy those separately at the parts dept of a Chevy dealer?

Thanks again for advice that actually worked!

Re: S-10 Blazer Squeaky Rear Window

Hey!..Thats great,Lowell. I'm glad it worked for you. As to the hinge pins,I'm not sure if they are available at the dealer. I just drilled out both hinge halves(body side and tailgate side) to 5/16" and then installed 5/16" x 5" long bolts with double nuts. Its working for me,but then,I'm kinda cheap!(LOL)
