Unhappy belt noise

I have a reacurring belt squeal that wont go away. It comes when the engine is at idle or if i turn the steering wheel to far. When i accelerate it quites. The problem also seems to be temp related. When the weather is warmer, it doesnt make the noise. I have tightened the belt so that isnt the issue. Any ideas?

Maybe the belt is just worn and needs to be replaced? If not there are Powders and such you can try that will hlep the belt grip better

Re: belt noise

well the belt is brand new and it seems to be more the pulley than the belt to be the center of the problem

Unhappy

hey phoenix i have a 95 tsi and i'm havin the same belt noise. its like a high pitch squeal that just makes me want to bomb the car until it shuts up... its mostly when its cold and if i have like the rear defogger or fan running or even turn the lights on or turn the steering wheel.

i just had my belt replced too and the mechanic said he checked the pulley and it didnt look like that was a problem... another mechanic tried to tighten the belt but he said its adjusted all the way against so it cant go tighter... he thought the belt might be a lil too long. i can make it shutup usually if i just rev it up to 3 or 4 k rpm's altho that gets noisy so its a royal pain in the ass!

i guess i'll try some sort of belt dressing b/c my mechanic cant even figure it out

Re: belt noise

Mine does that as well. And it does seem to me that it is a pully rather than a belt. I have my great story about my belt and alternator and stuff on this forum somewhere. But do not put belt dressing on it, a few mechanics around here just tell me that if you have to use belt dressing something is wrong and you should get it fixed. but as you were saying, when you rev it up a few times it will go away, I have not tried to tighten my belt yet cuz it is bloody cold (-45). So, I am not sure what it is yet, but mine does not make a diff if I have the lights, fan, or anything like that on, so maybe the problems are not realted at all. I do now know. The only similarity is that yes, when it is cold it seems to be much worse. I think it is simply the belt. If it is a new belt it is bound to stretch a bit more, go try and tighten it and see if your alternator is in properly when someone checks it! Cuz my squeeling was horrible and then I had to get the alternator alll fixed up a bit and then it went away for a while, then I think that the new belt (After the old one was eaten up) is simoly loose. I dont know if this makes any sense or not, but hope it helps!

Re: belt noise

ha, ya same problem with my 96 esi, however, a i figured it wasn't the timing belt, its the pulley that makes the noise, a little oil finished the job, it hasnt made the noise since i put oil around the pulley
