Engine Swap
I have a Scion xB that i'm considering swapping out the engine. I'm not sure what engine to put in it, and was wondering if anyone had some helpful information about it.

xBs aren't really the rice rocket of choice, but I'm sure with some effort you could squeeze a 1.8L VVT-i engine. But I would reather just get a nice exhuast system with a mac muffler to tone down the volume and spend more money on making it more for show and maybe better handling cuz it wasn't meant for high speed racing.

If you really want to race it up check if TRD has a SC for it and buy a really good full exhuast system, but don't forget to get a mac muffler. The reason I push for a Mac muffler is because they are smaller (much smaller), reduce the sound a lot, and have higher flow then any other muffler on the market. They aren't the cheapest but certainly the best. As for the suspension TRD is expensive but what I hear is that it's worth it. So check around for a SC, TRD suspension upgrades, exhaust, and that muffler I'm talking about.
macmufflers.com is the one I think. |

Re: Engine Swap
The SC for TRD should be coming out soon. But i'll wait to see what the word is with them.

Re: Re: Engine Swap
also check around for aftermarket SC, TRD tends to be a bit pricey.

Before you strap on a SC you might want to beef up the gasket, that is if you're going to run a lot of boost. Have you checked out some exhaust systems?

Re: Engine Swap
I plan beef up everything to make sure my little engine will be able to handle as much boost possible.

oh ok, so you have a cash flow.
Have you looked for any body enhancements, like carbon fiber body pannels, lighter wheels, lighter seats, etc.? |

Re: Engine Swap
Yeah they make carbon fiber hoods , fuel doors... Pretty much everything. Plus I get everything discounted. My picture on my posts is one of my cars. Its an xB with Chrome 18" BSA wheels, aftermarket TYC Tail lights, Chrome engine cover, TRD Strut brace, Billet Front Grills, AEM Air intake, Rear Spoiler. Its Alright !!

Re: Engine Swap
xA and xB both have too small hood compartments for a 1.8L VVT-i engine. Plus a swap would require ECU modification, transmission/axle/suspension upgrades to handle the extra weight, and custom mounting and wiring.
Your best bet would be a performance rebuild. It'll cost as much as a Swap, and it'll get you at least double to triple your stock hp rating. The other thing you could do would be to find some japanese tuner sites and see what they've done with the Toyota BBx (JDM Scion xB) and try the same thing. The benefit to that is that TRD Japan will have a helluva lot more stuff for it through Modellista. |
