I noticed the clutch on my '96 Accord LX suddenly felt looser in the last few days. The resistance on the first half of pressing the clutch feels so much looser that it's like the clutch is about ready to detach.
The owner's manual said to check the clutch fluid level, it should be between the "min" and "max" lines for proper fluid level. Mine was practically empty. Took the car to Honda dealership which diagnosed the problem as a leak in the master clutch cylinder. They also recommended to replace the slave cylinder as well. Estimated cost: $440 (parts/labor) + $122 diagnostic fee. My question is does this all add up? It is by coincidence that I found the root of a potentially damaging/dangerous problem by merely noticing the clutch felt different? If I just filled the clutch fluid without changing the cyclinders, would I just be putting my car at risk? Thanks for any feedback!!! |

I don't think that the problem is something that must be fixed before driving it again. I know my accord's clutch master cylinder is leaking, but it's not a big deal. It just controls the release of the clutch, so by running it low, I don't think it would damage anything. Your clutch just wouldn't release properly...or it would feel like the clutch was at the floor. Just check it regularly to make sure the fluid level stays above the minimum. If it does run empty, you might have to bleed the lines. If you don't do that, you could just pump the clutch until all the air works out of it.
Of course you still need to replace that leaking master cylinder, it's just not something that would require immediate attention (like a transmission or engine problem might). And I really don't think it should cost that much. That price sounds steep. Considering is a dealer, it probably is. Dealer's are expensive like that. I suggest taking it to a mechanic that doesn't work for the dealer. He/she would be less likely to rip ya off. Good luck. |
