CL600 vs. S500 Coupe

I was just curious. After reading some specs of these two cars, I noticed that the 2003 CL600 V12 engine only produces 345bhp (not too sure on this one, please correct me) while the old 1997 S500 Coupe V8 enigine produces 393bhp. The torque for the S500 is 470Nm, not sure about the CL600 though.
So my question is, can the old 1997 S500 Coupe out power the new CL600, even by a little?
Thanks.

Re: CL600 vs. S500 Coupe

The U.S. version of the 5.0L DOHC V8 only produced 315bhp, the current 5.0L SOHC V8 produces 302bhp.
The 2003 CL600 V12 engine should produce 500ps DIN in Europe and 493bhp SAE because of its bi-turbo, with a 5.5L displacement.
The pre-2003 model S/CL 600 had a 5.8L produced 364bhp

5.5L displacement? Is that AMG?
Why the sudden decrease of horse power?

The AMG 55s has a V8 engine with displacement of 5439c.c.
The bi-turbo 600s are V12s / 5513c.c.
If I remember correctly, Mercedes explaination for the power down-grade was the new S / CL were lighter than the previous generation.
Also the engine had been changed from DOHC 4 valves per cynlider to SOHC 3 valves per cynlinder.

The AMG 55 non-kompressor engine had been tuned in many different ways for different models.
Horsepower : 342 -> 354 bhp SAE
Torque : 376 lb-ft -> 391 lb-ft / 510Nm -> 530Nm (The 530 Nm was converted from lb-ft, not from Mercedes)

The AMG 55 kompressor has 2 horsepower rating, but with same torque
Horsepower : 469 bhp SAE / 476 ps DIN -> 493 bhp / 500 ps DIN
Torque : 516 lb-ft / 700 Nm

The 600 5.8L V12
Horsepower: 362 bhp SAE
Torque: 391lb-ft / 530Nm (estimated)

The 600 5.5L V12 bi-turbo
Horsepower : 493 bhp SAE / 500 ps DIN
Torque: 590lb-ft / 800 Nm

^^
I wanted to know that only :-)
Hmmm... It seems my 1997 S500 Coupe can out power a CL600 :-)
Thanks for the info.

I thought they had always been SOHC 3 valve

the CL600 is much stronger than the S500 1997.. your s500 power is around 315 HP while CL600 365HP....it will smoke you..

Re: CL600 vs. S500 Coupe

displacement is the worst method to gain power. It doesn't matter how much HP the S500 coupe has stock, the CL600 will overpower it because it has 4 more cylinders which equals more torque.
