Hotwireing a transmission in 1g?
I had a computer die in my 91 eclipse w/1.8L and auto trans. I didn't want to buy a new computer.. and i'm a mechanic.. so I sat and studied the wiring diagrams for my car.. and decided to give something a shot.
The transmission has one plug in with four wires. Each wire connects to a solenoid in the valve body and is powered by 12 volts from the computer. With no power to any wires, the car is in 3rd gear, or drive. And let me tell you, it is a gutless-wonder. Pulling 12volts through my fuse box, fused at 20 amp, I ran some very glorified jumper wires into the cab, and into my middle consol and connected them to toggle switches.
I'm not sure what all the wires do just yet, for now i can shift from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and a 5th gear.. Oddly, if you short 2nd gear and 4th gear together, you get 1st gear. then one wire is 2nd, no wires is 3rd, another wire is 4th. so far we've used two wires. Then I got the other one hooked up, it is only the torque converter lockout.. which does kill the car when your not moving by the way >_< So i have the 4th wire.. very odd wire. If i give it power in most any gear, it lets the RPM's drop to idle, in 1st and 2nd.. if you give it fuel, the RPM's pick up just fine until you hit your RPM for the speed you are going.. then it gives power to the ground. at higher speeds it just seems to throw it into perma-netural. The only thing i can think of is that this valve is opened for a split second as the computer shifts to make it a smooth gentle shift. Or perhaps to *ahem* smooth off my idle (shakes the car).. dunno.. I don't play with that one much as i'm not sure what it's doing to my tranny.. not that i care, the car is about worthless.. so I ride around with my semi-automatic transmission.. all the joys of shifting, but no clutch to worry about. makes for great autocrossing.. too bad my car has 85hp.. *DOH*
So when i take off and pass people at 70mph on the highway.. and then "SHIFT" at 70-75.. it freaks people out.. granted my little pos couldn't break 115mph if it wanted to.. but hey, it's fun.. and for a car i bought for 1$ and dropped a timing belt and a rebuilt head on it.. it runs pretty good.. looks like crap.. both doors have been smacked, one took a pretty big crunch in the driverside pillar behind the door. I do like 1g's eclipse.. but if i was going to do something i'd want a awd DOHC.. with a 5-speed.. the semi-automatic trans is cool and all, but nothing beats a clutch.
