Unhappy 95 Taurus Speedo Problem?

Hi I am new to the forum and i was hoping for some advice any help would be greatly apprechated...

I recently bought a 95 Taurus SE 3.0 v6 89,900 miles. I've noticed when driving on the highway the speedometer is totaly unreliable it jumps from 45 to past 85( speedo only reads up to 85) it also makes a kinda of ticking noise? I am hoping someone might have a possible solution to this problem i have had it to the tranny shop and they told me it wasnt on that end of things PLEASE help.

Thanks,
Aaron

Re: 95 Taurus Speedo Problem?

If it is a mechanical spedo,(there is a cable) most likely the cable should either be lubricated or replaced.

Question Speedometer issue on Ford Taurus 1995

I do have the same issue on a 1995 model and I can't believe that it is a cable issue as the noise related to the issue comes from (behind) the speedometer display!?

Then don't believe it, what do I care. You may have a different problem. Try and replace the speedo if you want.

The 95 should have an electric sensor (VSS) to send the speed signal to the computer and speedo, my 93 did.
It is in the transaxle. When bad the speedo jumps all over the place and can also make the tranny shift up and down on it's own, even if you are going at a steady speed. Sometimes the cruise control will stop working, as it gets it signal from the VSS also.

VSS may affect shift, but I have a similar issue with (mechanical) speedometer. Noise seems to be "in" speedometer. Speedo shop says these speedos were poorly built with cheap parts that wear out. Says speedo need refurb. THAT'S the probable issue re: speedo. Shifting may be VSS or TSS.
