Alfa GT vs 330Ci

Seeing as Alfa Romeo's new GT coupe's objective is to steal sales from the 3-series coupe, let's see how people think it'll fare.

Let's look at the top of the range models, which are priced similarly

Alfa Romeo GT V6
3.2L V6
FWD, 6-speed
236bhp@6200rpm
221lb/ft@4800rpm
0-60: 6.7s
Top: 151mph

BMW 330Ci Sport
3.0L Straight-6
RWD, 6-speed
231bhp@5900rpm
221lb/ft@3500rpm
0-60: 6.5s
Top: 155mph

The 330's nearly as powerful and as torquey but produces peak torque lower in the rev range. RWD is another obvious plus. In terms of looks i prefer the BMW's exterior (much nicer rims too) but the Alfa's interior looks more special, more of an event (shame i cant find any pics on the net!! )

Alfa's are pretty much the only cars that can tempt me out of BMW's (at this price level) but overall i think i'd still go with the beemer.

trust me alfa's have to be seen in person to be fully apreciated....and even though they are FWD they handle beautifully

they are often more than a match for BMW in european gt races

They did indeed win the European touring car championship, finishing a whisker ahead of BMW in the final standings

However that has little relevance to the road car, and FWD is really the big deterrent from the Alfa for me... if it were RWD, as all sports cars should be, it'd be a hell of a lot closer

well my point with the GT races was that alfa can do wonders even with a FWD setup

so its basically like a choice between the skyline GTR and a Z06...both are invincible so which will win on a track...its a paradox

yea those gt cars have lots of mods, and diff parts. put them both up against each other, both stock, and see who wins, i bet the bmw would beat the alfa on a track. i saw a show with the bmw, and the alfa. the alfa understeered pretty bad, and the bmw went through the turn without hitting anything, the understeer on the alfa was so noticeable from whatching both cars. they said that the bigger v6 version of the alfa actually had more understeer, or worse handling than the lower model, cause of more weight up front.

Re: Alfa GT vs 330Ci

Yes, the 2.5 and 3.2 models do have a very noticeable understeer, but I took my old 156 2.5 around many a track without too many problems, it comes down to how you drive it.

I've not taken the BMW to a track yet, but I'll do it in the Spring, my car is slighly different from the one Jay is comparing, in the sense it has 1 less gear, but otherwise they're more or less the same.

yes yes i've seen that particular episode...and she exagerated that understeer way too much(or she needs to let Tiff drive)....FWD cars actually do quite well in slaloms...heck the slalom is the least of my worries in autox

trust me on this one...don't put the handling of the alfa down till you drive one

and about the gt races...of course they are modded extremelly but both bmw and alfa are factory backed and its obvious (since they won) that alfa engineers have enough know-how to make a FWD car beat a BMW

EDIT: plus as Jimmy posted the handling of alfa's can differ quite a bit from car to car

yea almost any company probably knows make a fwd car handle good, but thats gt, and of course as we all know, a lot of it has to do with the driver, but we re talking about stock road cars, and i think that the bmw would beat the alfa on a track. i know how to drive fwd cars, i ve had a couple hondas, and hondas one of the best at fwd handling. i also had the car modified so it will oversteer more, and the camber up front had a bit of negative camber, so it did help a lot, my car actually oversteered, but a rwd car equally tuned well would be able to accelerate through corner better than a fwd car, esp when you have a lot of power.

and i agree with you...RWD is better for track racing...however by winning the GT racing alfa proved that even with the FWD disadvatage they can make a faster car...my point was that IMO if they want they can duplicate the same advatage in the regular models

this is not a fact of course...till wee see them side by side on a track we can only guess

The Alfa is a pretty stunning car. But I'm gonna have to choose the 330ci. I like the looks better. As well as RWD.

But Alfa's aren't sold in the states anymore so I couldn't even go for a test drive.
