How much would you pay for a 97-99 gsx with 80,000-100,000 miles on it?And is that to high of miles to get 400hp out of?

Re: Buying an gsx

Hey Nathan,

On the eternal quest for 400hp i see.

Im not sure that you could find one for 12-15000 if you dig around for a while. But with that kind of milage on it i would not sugest you go for 400hp without some king of engine work.

Such things like, replace all seals, such as oil pan gasket, hed gasket kit, valve stem seals, and anything else that acts as a sealing surface.

Change all fluids, coolant, brake fluid, oil, clutch fluid, tranny fluid, diff fluid, ect.

Some head work, het the head decked(resurfaced), valve job, while its off get a P&P(port and polish), new valves if the existing ones are burnt, possibly new springs.

Any other wear and tare components. You might discouver that you may need some bottom end work as well. Possibly new thrust bearings, oil squirters, piston rings.

I guess it all really depends on the mechanical condition of the car. If it has been properly maintained then it will be good after some TLC.

Re: Buying an gsx

I have seen 6 bolt motors with nearly 200k miles make well over 400 whp. As long as the compression is good, mileage doesnt matter If a 7 bolt has over 80k miles, chances are its a good motor and wont crankwalk. I would hesitate to go for 400 whp at that mileage at all. Stock internals, aside form cams.

Re: Re: Buying an gsx

You say that you wouldn't go over 400 hp with a 97 and up gsx with 80,000 miles on it?.If i redo the engine, meaning pistons, rods, valves, springs, retainers.Would 400 hp hold with a engine with 80k?Would more would i need to do to the engine?I think i would port the head. How much does that cost?
