Need help don't know what engine i have?

The number on the block says it is a b16a and the # underneath is 1013163. I bought this car and want to know what motor it is out of. Please help. My ECU # is 37820-PR4-L02.

Re: Need help don't know what engine i have?

The number under the engine code should match the number on the fire wall. What kind of car is it? Sounds like you have a B18a not a B16A check it again and see b/c the PR4 ecu is for a B18A which is non vtec and the B16A is vtec. Does it say VTEC on the valve cover? Let me guess you have either a civic with a swap or a 90-93 intgera.

Yes i have a 91 civic that is swoped. It does say Vtec on the cover. I believe the ecu is out of a the 91 civic. I have my vtec hooked to a toggle swich.

You need to get that changed and get a P28 or P72 ecu. It will run alot better garanteed. The PR4 ecu does not have maps for vtec, so it cannot have the right A/F ratio during vtec.

Nor can it trigger your vtec for that matter. However, you might double check to make sure you read the engine code right. The 8 in B18A might look like a 6 if you can't see it very well. I met a guy who had a B18b swapped into his 92 civic, he seemed to like it.

That is why he has a switch for vtec. Like said before he needs a p28 or p72

Either I missed where he wrote that he had a toggle switch for his vtec, or he edited that post.

I know a lot of shops don't put the proper ECU in with a swap. People buy a swap from them (tranny, ecu, etc) and they just don't put the right ECU in. I saw a SHOPS car, a civic with a B18C5 type-r motor (boosted at that....sigh). I saw the ecu was ripped out one time and asked what was up. They said they needed an ecu for a EX and wanted to see if it worked. I asked, "you are trying to run an EX off a type-r ecu?" To that, they responded, "no, it'd s chipped EX ecu. We've been running the type-r off that. It works fine." I see this all too much with swaps. If you get a swap or buy a swapped car, MAKE SURE the proper ECU is in it. After all, the type-r, for example, won't run well with that EX ecu. That's most likely why they had it parked looking all nice in the center of the shop showroom floor. I've found a lot of shop's like that. They give you incorrect info or cut corners like this. Then when you call them on it, they tell you that you are wrong. Just watch what you buy, that's all I am saying. Make sure you get you would paid for and expected. Otherwise you end up with something like this or your motor...a B16A (vtec) with a B18A1 non-vtec ecu. That motor should be running to 88-91 B16A ecu as well...not just the B16A motor with the wrong ecu.
