1996 Tahoe 4wd actuator
My 4wd is engaging but it seems like sometimes it doesn't disengage all the way. Sometimes I'll hear a slight whine after I've put it back in 2wd when I'm driving through town. Also, twice in the last year and a half or so, when I engaged the 4wd while stopped, when I would start to move a grinding sound would come from the front end. If I stop and then go again, it worked fine. That problem is very rare, though. Most of the time, it just seems like it isn't disengaging right. The lights on the buttons seem to be working fine. They never show it as sticking in 4wd or 2wd. Does this sound like a front actuator problem or am I just nuts? Also, if I need one, where is the cheapest place to get it? Thanks in advance.

Re: 1996 Tahoe 4wd actuator
Not sure where the best place to get one is but if replacing it I'g go with a newer version instead of the thermo actuated.
I still always reverse for 10 feet or so when disengaing 4wd. Just a carry-over from the "good ol' days" I guess. |

Yeah, I try to back up a few feet when I can. I've always done it as well. What is involved in switching to the new style actuator?

To my knowledge you simply unplug the old one, screw it out, screw the new one in, plug it up.

That doesn't sound too bad to do. Just hoping that's what the problem really is.
