96 2.2L Dies

While driving the interstate, began to lose power. Upon slowing to a stop, the engine died. Now it is difficult to start and will not continue running unless it's revved up.
I have checked the ignition system and coils and wires are good, plugs are getting carboned up.
Initial codes indicated adaptive fuel rich.
Swapped the throttle body with a known good one including MAP sensor and IAC valve, replaced the Engine Coolant Temp Switch and Powertrain Control Module. Dropped the exhaust at the manifold to check for clogged catalytic converter. All have made no difference. However, I don't any longer get the rich fuel code, I get the code MAP Sensor Input High.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks 92civichathcb18, I am looking into that now. Weather here will not cooperate however, will post the results once I can get the cover off and check the timing.

Re: 96 2.2L Dies

Blame the alternator, easy part to blame and often goes out, specially on 96s. Seems everyone here has problems with a 96, definatly the worst year. My alternator is going out, but not dead yet. Sounds like yours is.

Re: 96 2.2L Dies

At long last, the problem has been identified. Jumped Timing. Apparently the tensioner has some sort of plastic or nylon inserts that deteriorated and virtually destroyed the tensioner.
