300Z or 3000GT?
Hey ya'll. I'm about to buy a car for daily driving and racing at night. I really like the Mitsubishi 3000GT, and I can get a 97 with 100,000 miles for around $15,000, leaving me pennies to modify it. On the other hand, I can get a 96 300Z with 100,000 which I also really like for around $8000, leaving me $7000 to modify it. Basically I'm asking what's better, a souped up 300Z or a stock 3000GT?

a souped up 300zx is gonna be faster than a stock vr4.
if you put 7grand into a 300ZX your gonna have a lot of hp(500+) but at the same time if you put that money into a vr4 you would get the same thing. but since the 300zx is cheaper leaving more room to upgrade then go 300zx. thats my opinion

I would go with a diff 3000gt, less miles but an earlyer year and it should be cheeper. Are these the TT models you are talking about?
One thing to consider is that the 300ZX is even more of a bitch to work on than our cars. |

I think maby you need to get a civic. Cause you been watchin to many movies. A race car and a daily driver are totaly different.
But if you must get a 300zx, I have one but it is not running at this time. One turbo is completly sezed cause the oil ffed line got crushed. But she has over 600whp and will kill a 3000GT.By the way i have nothing against a 3000GT i usta own one, but not what they are cracked up to be IMO. |

It will kill a 3000gt, but can be killed by one as well. Mods are mods, and If you do blah blah you will be faster, but if I do blah blah blah ill be faster.
It all depends on what your looking for in a car, the 3000GT VR4 is a touring car, not a 1/4 mile car, and the only option it has is 10 disk cd changer. Other than that it came loaded. And Im not deffending it being slower than other cars, Im mearly stating what the car is and isnt. But I do agree, this guy is most likely looking for a 300ZX. |

Re: 300Z or 3000GT?
Which one would be worse as far as mantenance goes? I heard 3000GTs are moderately reliable, but getting things fixed on them is really exspensive

All sports cars and especially ones with forced induction are going to be more expensive in the repaid department.
From the description it sounds like the 300Z is the way to go.

Re: 300Z or 3000GT?
The reason y the 300zx is basheed for its mantenance is because of the confined engine bay. Its quite a large engine for such a small engine bay. But as far as reliability of the parts go, it is very good. But you will have to do some "reliability mods" such as aftermarket boost guage, water temp guage, oil pressure guage, a/f guage.
If you are somewhat mechanicly inclined the 300zx would be a good car for you. |

89Turbo944, is it true you have to pull the engine to swap the turbos on the Z? Ive heard people say that, but never spoken to anyone who has actually worked on them.

Re: 300Z or 3000GT?
Nissan recomends that you drop the engine out if you plan on doing any kind of major work to the car. And that includes changing the turbos.
But it can be done while the engine is still in the car, but i hope you got some skinie arms, and they are made of rubber cause it is a pain in the ass to change them. |

just as you said about the 300 bieng big engine in small area so is the 3kgt vr4. hell that engine was shoe horned in there. from what i've heard for 1/4 mile the early vr4s are better cause of the 5 speed.
but from what i know the vr4 and the 300zx are very similar even mod to mod. now if you get a vr4 for same price then you can flip a coin or go by looks cough cough 3kgt cough cough but as far as your sitiuation go with the 300z

Re: 300Z or 3000GT?
No im not saying that at all. I have a BPU 97 Supra that has 400hp and it is a daily driver. I never said that any of those cars were not good dailydrivers.
Well the RX7 is not a very good car for a daily driver. But anyways. My point is that a race car will not be a daily driver. The set up on the car is not suited for daily driving. "Hey ya'll. I'm about to buy a car for daily driving and racing at night" I think this is what he ment. The hole bit about runing 10's or 12's isnt what he wanted to know. Get a 300ZX and dont beat on it, do all the reliability mods that you can and keep a sharp eye on the engine and you will be happy with it. |
