Unhappy Do I need a New Transmission, or is it the Clutch?

Or BOTH?!

Everytime I change to Second Gear it Grinds.

Not only that, sometimes it'll slip out, but only on 2nd gear.
I actually have to hold it in place for it to stay locked in as I
release the clutch.

As for the rest of the gears, sometimes I can't even shift into
them. It's like their blocked. So i have to let go of the clutch
for a bit, then push it down again for the gear to open. Any ideas?

Re: Do I need a New Transmission, or is it the Clutch?

Its your syncro ring on 2nd gear. You donot need a new clutch (maby you do i cant tell from my seat) and you dont need a new tranny. You do need to have your 2nd gear syncro ring replaced.

With the problem shifting into the gears. Is this mainly reverse? Sometimes i will have a problem putting it into first at a stop but you just have to be gental with it.

Also you may also want to check the tranny fluid to see if it is at the right level and also might want to try an additive. This will save you from spending the money to have the syncro replaced right away.

Good luck

Re: Do I need a New Transmission, or is it the Clutch?

Replace the fluid with BG Synchroshift. If that helps its not the clutch. If the pedal engages to close to the floor it can affect how well you can get into gear, but if its normal, its most likely not the clutch...

Re: Do I need a New Transmission, or is it the Clutch?

Also the staying in gear problem it could be a few things.

The linkage to the transmission mab be worn or improperly adjusted, shift linkage binding (which could be the problem with you getting it to go into gear), or maby a worn shift fork.
These could all cause it to slip out of gear.

hmm, i'll have to get it looked at then, i hope that it takes care of the problem... and i'll go ahead and add that additive, i don't want to have any major problems i've put enough into this car to keep it running smoothly every month. for once, i wish the car would behave for one month

Just for clarification, you arent looking for an additive. Use BG Synchroshift which is the actual tranny fluid. Drain the tranny, and fill with BG. Most DSM vendors offer it, dont pay more than 12 bucks a bottle. You'll need 3. It cures the crappy 2nd gear synchro syndrome in 75% of 1Gs.

i have seen a clutch that wouldnt let you shift into gear and then you let out and put back in and it would work... all we did was filled up and bled the hydrolic line on the slave cylinder. after we got all the air out and topped off the fluid in the master cylinder it worked like new hope that is part of your prob... easy fix

sorry... forgot to include:
It was the clutch hydrolic line that we bled.

shifting problem

well if i was going to take a stab at it i would check the linkage first. the linkage went bad in my car, and it sounds like the same problem i had. it would not go into gears some times, would have to hold it in second and fith every time i shifted. so look at that hope i could help have good day
