91 XLT Sputters, misses at low speeds

I have a 91 XLT with a 2.3 engine. At low speeds it misses and sputters and sometimes backfires, that is, until it gets over 2000 rpm. Then it seems to run fine. Have checked connections, wires, fuel, filters.......in other words, the usual suspects. I am now officially at my wits end and I really cant afford to start throwing the parts store at this critter.

Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Re: 91 XLT Sputters, misses at low speeds

You might try relpacing the intake gasket and bolts. The fuel/air mix is not correct if the gasket is not working properly and will cause sputtering at low speeds and will sound like you are deiseling when accelerating or going up a hill. The gasket and bolts are inexpensive ($20)but unless you do the work yourself, will cost you about $200 at a ford dealer.
