Need urgent help with wheel hub/CV axle
OK, I'm looking for some big help. Trying to help a friend out with this. '86 Ford Taurus with 3.0L and auto trans. Has a noise coming from the front drivers side front wheel/CV axle assembly. Figured it was the CV axle and got it replaced. Noise still there. Before throwing more money at this I need to help her out (poor college student) figuring whats really wrong. Is there a separate bearing inside the front hub/spindle assembly that might be going south. It sounds like a bearing but thought swapping the CV axle would solve all that. Seems to be worse at slower speeds and also pitch changes depending on whether your turning left or right, etc... She had a brake job done recently and the rotors were not swapped, so I first thought maybe warped rotor, but again it sure sounds likea bearing. THanks again for any help you can offer.

Re: Need urgent help with wheel hub/CV axle
jack up the car on the side you replaced the half-shaft, block the wheels and put car in neutral and spin the tireif. listen for a gravelly sound as you spin the tire. the hub holds the wheelbearing inside of it and can only be replaced as a unit. usually 3 torx head bolts hold the hub in plus the big nut you took off the halfshaft when you replaced it. if you had spun the hub when you replaced the halfshaft you would have heard it. they should be silent when you spin them.
