First Post, go easy...

Hello, Im new to the board and my wife and I recently purchased a 2001 XTERRA SE 4x4. We are extatic(sp?) about our new truck but we have just uncovered some things that the previous owner might not have mentioned. First off, the rear windshield wiper OR washer wont work. Second, the gas guage reads VERY incorrectly. My wife filled the truck up and topped it off and the gas guage only says it has 3/4 of a tank.

Does anyone know of these particular things being a problem constantly is an issue?? Anyone have any tips as to specific XTERRA sites???

Thanks everyone!

P.S.- we are in the St.Louis area and if anyone is within a 100 or so miles, lemme know and we can meet up to hit a trail or two!

First off. Welcome to the board.

Confused by what you mean the rear wiper OR washer won't work. Does that mean one doesn't work sometimes and then the other doesn't?

The fluid reservoir for the rear uses the same as the front. Typically you'll lose rear washing before the front. You might also have a blown fuse and should track that down.

Yeah, the gas tank readings can fluctuate from 3/4 to a needle or two over full when that tank is topped off. It's a "feature" and if you're lucky it stays the same and you'll just learn how much mileage you have before empty really means empty.

Some others I'm sure will add to this, but that's off the top of my head before I roll to work.

BTW, do some searches too (for this issue and others). Sometimes we forget stuff that came up a couple of years ago, but the info is still in there.

There are some other boards with info. Some are technical and focus on Xterra specific issues like NissanOffroad and here, etc. Others have a lot of chatter, but less Xterra specific info.

I don't know if the fuel issue is a "feature?" I thought we decided yours did that because of the dent in the bottom of your fuel tank? Mine has never read anything but "full" when it is filled. I think TTLXStang might have a dent too or a fuel sending unit that's on the fritz because that is definately not normal behavior.

The fuel sending unit (including the gauge mechanism) is under recall, be sure to mention your gas guage issue when you have your Xterra in for the inspection and/or replacement. I don't recall if MO is one of the states where it is replaced regardless or only if there is corrosion found, but if it's replaced, your problem should be cured in the process.
