454 vs 350

Im a newby at restoring classic cars, and my chevelle ss has a 454 big block in it, tho recently i heard that u can get more power mod for mod with a 350 and that i should try selling my 454 and do an engine swap, does anyone know the truth behind this, and which would be the best choice, my 454 has 7000 miles on it, and is practically brand new, and it would be a new 350 we'd be putting in, i'd really like some feedback, thanks

Re: 454 vs 350

Do you have an original SS? I know there were no 454 in '69 Chevelles (read your profile ). As far as putting in a 350 to replace your 454, you're asking if you should do it....ummm, NO. All things being equal, the 454 will always out-power a 350. There's no substitute for cubic inches. If you put a blower on both motors, the 454 will be stronger, if you put nitrous on both motors, the 454 will be stronger...and on and on. But if you're really into a 350 swap, heck, send your 454 to me...I'll gladly take it . The only thing you might get out of the 350 that's better, is mileage, and a slightly lower cost for parts.

Re: 454 vs 350

If you do decide to replace the 454 for a 350(don't do it) then keep the 454. You will most likely want to swap back in the future. I dropped a 350 in mine because I blew up my 454 a few years back. After driving it with the 350 in it for a year I couldn't wait to go back to a 454. I am happy to say that's what's in it now.

Hey, two things. First, a 350 Chevy is a bitch engine. Chevy put it in everything from Corvettes and Camaros to Blazers and Tahoes. Your 454 could rip a 350's ass in three different places . I own a 1970 LS6 SS454 Chevelle and El Camino (Just bought my Elky ) I also have owned three 350 camaros, and a couple of 350 Chevelles. Believe me, the 454 is sooooo much better. Second thing, my Chevelle, stock, made about 450hp, and now with a blower, dual dominator carbs, headers, and forged aluminum pistons, it makes around 1100hp, and Ive only spent about 5 grand. (bought the car for 2 grand) This engine is so strong, I even run a 350 hp shot of nos, and Ive never burned a ring, piston or gasket. As soon as I get a digital camera, Ill show you my cars. I'm a severe racing enthusiast. I only own one car with less than 8 cylinders. A modded 1987 Buick GNX with twin turbos and nos. Peace!!

Welcome to the forum DeliRiuM6969. Put some pictures up of your vehicles and the engines. Would like to see them.

Re: 454 vs 350

are you nuts? "There is no replacment for displacment" Build the crap out of a 350 or run a stock big block? easy choice....
