buy high mileage 1997 avalon?

I am shopping for a used car and was looking at older avalons and camrys. I found a nice 1997 avalon, but it has 137,000 miles. I plan to have mechanic check it, but assuming there are no major problems, would you think this car still has a lot of miles in it , or would the mileage scare you off? He's asking $6500. thanks for any thoughts on this.

I have a 1997 Avalon with exactly that high mileage, and have had not problems to this point. I would make sure the timing belt has been replaced. My engine still runs like new. Only complaint I have is the ride--has a choppy ride. Sounds like the price may be a little high, but negotiate.

I just bought a 97 Avalon. Interior is great! Ride is great! The only thing is sometimes when I hit a bump, it kinda makes a clunking sound. I don't know if it is supposed to be this way or this is how the Avalon suspension is designed. Don't get me wrong, its not like it is a real loud clunking noise, but more subtle. Also, whenever I hit 65-75 MPH, the steering column starts to shake a little. Also shakes a little bit when I brake. The shaking is probably a motor mount, I think. Any ideas??

Re: buy high mileage 1997 avalon?

How many miles do you have on your Avalon? What's your tread like in on your tires? When and what was the last time you serviced your car for anything?
