Question 91 Celica Retractable Light Problem

Hey yall, this is my first and desperate attempt to try out this site. I've searched everything and everywhere for people who have the same problem as I do and I can't find any.
Well, one night my passenger side retractable headligt didn't go down when I switched them off. The driver's side did. I tried lowering manually and playing around with the switch. When I lower it manually with the knob under the motor and switch it, it will go down and come back up and stay up. It just wont go down.
I read somwhere here on the internet that the relay under the dash can screw up but im skeptical about that. I took out the relay and there's no real way of testing it without a tester. ( which i don't have )
What should I do or who should I take it to to get it checked out other than the dealer b/c they really dig into my pockets.

thanks

Re: 91 Celica Retractable Light Problem

i had a similar problem when the front end of my car was backed into while no damage was done 1 light wouldnt go down. I found out that the motor running the light which is the switch you had to constant twist till it went down had burnt up. You might want to check into getting an entire new motor for the head light. Good luck ill check back here to see if you need any other info.

Question

Hey, thanks for repling. It seems as if no one has my kind of problem. Umm, about the motor going out... I think it still is aright because when i manually lower the light, and turn it on with the switch it comes up!!
The motor just goes in a circle, spins half way to open and half to close.
Could this be somthing other than the motor? Maybe electrical? If not and I have to replace it, please tell me so I can start my search at the junkyards~
Thanks!!!

Re: 91 Celica Retractable Light Problem

I fairly sure that the motor is burned even though you can reset it to turn the lights on it still wont go in a full motion. The motor can work up to a certain point but once it still has to be burnt out at a specific point. imagine it this way the motor is like a breaker when you turn the motor to get the light to go down you trip it to reset. but when you try and turn on the light it blows it all over again. I know i make it now sound like its a relay but it is indeed the motor. Even if you want to investigate it a junkyward motor is much cheaper then investigating this problem.

Hey, Thanks for repling!!
I found the real problem last night... My car has been in a wreck with its previous owner and I'm fixing it up. Well, found out that when i had taken out the side corner light, it had somehow ruptured a crappy set of wires that branched off and went to the motor. Found this out by spotting the crappy wires to the motor. I gotta find the exact spot today and tape it up. Ohh, i got a set of wires similar to the ones for the corner lenses but no lights? Fog lights for the previous bumper??
And another quick question... Is it supposed to say Toyota on the trim on the hood?? Mine looks like stock but no "Toyota" no emblem. I'm missing the trim right under the hood so i thought maybe thats where the emblem goes.
thanks, you've been a lotta help!!

Re: 91 Celica Retractable Light Problem

mine doesnt have the toyota symbol either, but its got Toyota writin on some carbon fiber looking stuff at the tip of the hood.. Also my aunt, who i bought the car from, had a problem a while back w/ the lights being stuck in the up position, im not sure what she did, im actually looking for a conversion kit for the 6th gen lights... If you've seen any let me know!
