need to get a new muffler... any suggestions?

When i get some money i want to get a new muffler for my 97 talon esi... right now it sounds like a frickin rice burner... and my boyfriend is making fun of me... i told him well the car came with that awful sounding muffler when i bought it, so i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what type of muffler to get so i don't sound like a ricer?

thanks,
kat

I say get a whole exhaust system! It will sound better and increase your performance. Then you can shove that in your boyfriends face :-)

if its a 4 banger its always going to sound like a "ricer" no matter what exhaust you throw on it....if i were you just put a stock muffler on if you don't want it to sound raspy or mildly.

man, you can make that talon sound awesome. regardless if it is a 4 cyl. There are mufflers/exhaust that sound great! Do not put a stock muffler on if you are going to spend the money. make it well spent and get an aftermarket. It will sound better and look better too.

IMO, most aftermarket mufflers sound the same, just some are louder or not as deep as the other. But the same engine sound is still there no matter what kind of muffler it is. I've experimented with a 2.2 on a cav. and i tried flowmaster, magnaflow, the stainless round mufflers. The Magnaflow SS muffler sounded the best because it was a mild tone, not too loud and provided great power.

I can't resist throwing my two cents in here. I think I know what kind of muffler you have on the car right now. Is it one of those with the huge outlet pipe? A lot of people here in the Chicagoland area use them, and in my opinion, they sound terrible. Everyone can hear you coming, (including your local law enforcement officers), and they really do sound annoying as hell.

Here's something a lot of you may not believe. My 1992 Talon has 208,000 miles on it, and with the exception of the flex pipe that goes between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter, I still have the original exhaust system. That's right, original catalytic converter, muffler, pipes, and hangers. The car still has lots of power, averages 26 mpg or more, and just passed the emissions test a few months ago. As a matter of fact, I did the fast pass, which means the emissions were low enough that only minimal testing was required.

I like the stock exhaust on the car (obviously), it is quiet, and efficient. There may be benefits to be gained by going to a custom exhaust on a turbo talon, but for the non-turbo, I wouldn't even bother.

Mark

Re: need to get a new muffler... any suggestions?

thanks so much for the input, right now my car has a magnaflow perfomrance muffler with 2 pipes coming off of it. THanks for all the input! My new neighbor has a ricer and i don't want to sound like that car! it is soooo dorky looking! navy, lime green and a dolphin/shark thing. good god it looks like ass!
