83 733i power steering

My power steering pump is making noise like it needs to be filled. How do I do that? This is my first bmw and I don't see where to fill it.

Hmm,

There is a reservour for the steering and power brake booster.

It is a round metal cylinder with a metalcap with a center screw lock.

Fluid is Power steering fluid or ATF, which ever you have.

There is a filter in the bottom of the reservoir if it does not need service.
This filter can cause fluid starvation.

If still making noise after the service and or filter you need a pump change.

Not to bad.
Here is a link to the e24 site with lots of help.

Do NOT use Power Steering fluid in the hydro booster!

The power steering fluid will cause the gasket to expand and deteriorate and the system to leak. It will also cause the power steering pump to go bad. Use ONLY ATF in the hydro booster. Here's how to do it.

Before you start the car in the morning, or after it has not been run for a couple of hours, open the hydro booster and check the level of ATF in there. Get in the car and without starting the engine, pump the brake pedal 15 times. Then check the level of the ATF in the booster. If the level has not risen to 1/2 inch below the top, add more ATF until the level is there.

There is also a filter at the bottom of the hydro booster that has a tendency to smoosh after a while because of all the pressure in the hydro booster. Replacement of that part will help. Just beware as there is a spring with other parts on it that will shoot out of that thing and you will have a hard time finding the parts and then figuring out which order they go back together.

Let us know how it goes.
