I was browsing turbo/superchargers on ebay when I came across an electric supercharger for like $100.
It says they aren't car-specific..like one fits all Hondas. It's supposed to add like 70HP. It's like a 6" x 6" fan basically that hooks onto your intake. It says you need a 3" intake for it to fit. I was just wondering if it really helps that much...for that cheap! |

I can't believe that it would work - could you send a link?
I work for an aerospace company and, among other things, we design and manufacture high-performance turbomachinery here (read: high pressure and/or high flow aerospace grade fans). From what I understand, turbos can generate from 8-12 psi of boost, though I don't know how MUCH air (in cfm) they generate. I'd need both sides of the equation to fully calculate, but at 8-12 psi, you're effectively talking about a low volume compressor. We've got a unit that generates about 2 psi at 90cfm, works at 28 volts and draws far more amps than the average component in your car. Based on this, I can't see how an "electric blower", as it were, is feasible. JM EDIT : 1/12/04 for clarification in 3rd paragraph. Last edited by Dynwolf; 01-12-2004 at 08:20 PM. |

It pulls from your battery at I think it said 3psi. 12 volts.
Here's a picture of it...I'll get back to you on the link in a minute... Edit: cant upload it lol...how do you upload pictures? |

It's junk. At 6k rpm on a D16Y8 it needs atleast 400CFM of air to run. That thing would only be hindering air flow.
Wonder how much power it would take to push 8psi at 400cfm? |

I had an idea like this awhile back, take a really high powered leaf blower ,most put about 400 cfm,and get a very very powerful power inverter probably 3000 watt, then if you wanted to get really technical about shit you could install a volume control knob in place of the switch on the leaf blower and hook it up to your throttle body so as it turned it would turn the dial on the leaf blower allowing it to spin faster.I failed to realize that you also need fuel upgrades for this to work just as a turbo system. This way would be better for turbo charging cause it would save room and weight(no FMIC,extra piping, blowoff valve, wastegate,or a turbo manifold) which is alot of weight and room if u think about it.So far as trying this idea ive done ,especially after i installed my fuel management unit with a 12:1 ratio I couldnt do a full test on it because i had to turn on the leafblower first then run back to my car and turn it on.I intentionally wanted to run my car with the ebrake up and floor it then have someone plug it in and see if i got any tire spin.Ill let you know tommorow if it works or not cause im doing the full test.

I have always had the idea that you could end up combining a turbocharger WITH an electric leafblower. It could feed the turbo air, maybe decrease lag, and increase power! Just my dream.
It would be one hell of a circus under the hood. Vooooooo-VVvvvvoooooOSSSHHH.

Its the Thomas Knight ECS-400 20psi in 3/10 of a second You'll never see it in any of my cars though.

That would be interesting in a strip only application. Since it only works for 15 seconds at a time. I still would rather go with turbo. Thats kind of funny that they claim a motor with 130hp will generate 230hp with the ESC, 203 with a regular SC, and 216hp with a turbo all at 7psi. Thats with header/manifold and CAI even on the turbo some how in the application. Without CAI on the turbo it's 207hp.
