You should talk to Darrell(TheNotoriousMogg). he has a couple of forum sites of his own, Im sure he'd give you information on how to go about it.

You'll need a server which supports SQL protocols along with php as well, and preferbly some form of apache or other form of web server.
Basically you need a webserver which support various protocols, and depending on the server you might like to include things such as FTP and SSH for future configuration/tweaking/upgrades/remote access. I'm talking from a linux stand point of view simply because of the cost factor and power. There's nothing wrong with setting up an MS based server, but with ~66.6% of the market running a Linux/Unix backbone, it's quite hard to go against the tide, plus the cost again its great. Best option is to go with paid hosting, this way everything is taken care for you (even security). The software this board runs on is made by a company Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd, and its called vbulletin. Hence the name of the nested address when you come in here, also its listed at the bottom. Its one of the best forum software but you need to obtain licensing rights before you use it. There are free versions of such forum software such as phpboard, ikonboard, etc, just do a search for it. But remember most run with a combination of SQL and PHP, so make sure your server supports it. The odd ASP and JAVA is used for the forum, but it depends on what floats your boat. |

Re: Forums?
I'd probably be better off going with the paid hosting, as I know very little about programming.
So I'd buy the licence rights, then install it on the hosts server? Thats right? |

So if you wish to use vbulletin, you'll have to purchase the software, but since its starting up why not just use a free version first (like phpboard, ikonboard, etc google them) and when your site gain popularity, then get vbulletin. As vbulletin is a great software and fairly stable (so is their free counterpart), but each to their own. Good luck btw. |

Re: Forums?
Among the open-scripts one, I have used both phpBB3 and SMF. phpBB3 always takes the lead. It has got more mods, themes etc. On the other hand, SMF doesn’t give you much features as compared to phpBB3.

Please check the date of the post before posting to it. This one in particular was last posted in 2004 and by a banned member no less. Even if he was not banned, I doubt he would need this information this far in time.
Again, when posting to a thread, please be aware of the date. If its over 3 months, you can start a new thread and place a link to the original for reference. But posting in it just brings it back from the dead and pushes down any new threads down the list. TS out Closing this thread.
