Help! Want to revive 60's Beatle from death

hello all,

newbie here... just wondered if anyone knows of a great place or person to help my girlfriend and I fix up an old beatle. i think the main problem is the engine. should it be replaced or rebuilt?

maybe i should first ask if anyone knows of a great VW or beatle shop that can help in this endeavor (and help to make sure it's the engine). We live in Ohio. The car, right now, is in Cinncinnati and I'm in Canton. any help would be awesome. take care, loc.

I know of a place here in Maryland. They do really good work. And there is also NewGermanPerformance (NGP) a little up north.

Rebuild? if the block is good, not cracked, doesn't need too much honing, then sure that would be the cheaper route. Will take time to wait for it, but will be the original block(numbers matching) in the car...

New? well it really isn't new, they took an old block, or one that someone traded as a core when they got a "new" engine. You will have the same effect and same deal, just not your block. although it is more instant, and you can pop it right in when it comes. if you go this route, keep your old engine and send it in as a core to get money back on the deal.

all and all just tell them what size bore you want and how fast you want to go. play with customizing it a little. add and upgrade parts, cam, intake, carbs... go all out. have fun.

that is a link to the Bug Out. It is in Manassas, VA every year, at Old Dominion Speedway. It is the biggest VW and Bug show on the east. people come from all over. I had a guy from europe follow me there last year. there are drags, stands, dealers, used/new parts. you name it. If it isn't at this show, then you will never find it, trust me. There is even one company that builds bug engines and brings them with them, at a discounted show price. Grab one while you are there. Talk to other bug owners and get ideas... trade secrets... rusted floor pans... they are for sale there. new door? pshhh its there. wanna buy or sell.... you got it. come on see you there...

i'll be there. look for the kid with the white 84 rabbit conv, probably a 2001 TDI, and some other hot cars in a group. i will be there somewhere. my convertible might be green by then so.. eh.. just go have fun. ok later.
