Putties

I need to know which putty to get and I need information on them.

What do you use the following putties for?


Tamiya Putty (Basic Type)



Tamiya Sculpting Putty



Tamiya Epoxy Putty


Tamiya Polyester Putty

I have the Basic Type (top picture) and the sculpting putty. The basic type is best suited to filling small joints, for instance between engine block halves, though I have now taken to using regular hobby glue for this type of work as it dries quicker. Also with the basic type make sure it is well mixed before using it, dont use it stright from the tube as it can shrink and possibly ruin the part you are using it on. This happened to me on the nose cone of the Formula One car you can see in my thread. It was not a disaster but it could be.
The sculpting putty I have only just started using and it best suited to major body mods (like a bodykit or something). For a quick example check here,

The putty I used on the body of the Ferrari is the sculpting type. It is an epoxy type putty which means it comes in 2 solid strips and needs to be mixed 1:1, this may sound difficult but is actually very easy. It is also vey easy to use, just be careful not to apply it too thickly as I did, especially because it is not cheap.

If you are making a kit, you only need the basic putty. But it's not meant to be used to build a thick volume. It's only useful for gap filling and minor correction.

Epoxy and polyester putty don't shrink, so they are suitable for volume sculpting. Epoxy can be handled with fingers, so you can create the shape, which is pretty close to the final shape. Make sure to moisten your fingers, or it will stick. The down side of epoxy putty is its low curing time, and even the quick type takes a few hours.

Polyester puty is my favorite, and it's also useful for volume scuilpting. Polyester putty is paste-like, so it's hard to sculpt the desired shape by the first try. However, it cures extremely fast (10 - 15 min), so it's ideal to work section by section.

If you are going to make your own body kit, you'll need all of them, and use the right kind accordingly.

If you are going to make a body kit, I would use as much styrene as possible and just use putty to fill in gaps or sculpt more obscure shapes. Just my
