install "manual" 4wd actuator?

as is custom for trucks like mine (96 z71 350cc manual shift), the 4wd actuator switch is bad. i am told that GM has replaced the OEM version with an improved version (that, of course, must be retrofitted with an adapter). i have recently learned, through another nameless forum, that there is an aftermarket cable style device that can be installed in lieu of an actuator which will remedy the problem as well as prevent future problems of this sort. (see: ttp://www.drivetrain.com/4x4PosiLock.html). is this a good idea? is anyone familiar with this contraption? can a novice install this?
